Hooning in a Ferrari F430

I worked at a Ferrari and Lamborghini driving experience event this weekend. Basically go do some short hot laps on an "autocross" course in a mall parking lot. Got to do some hooning laps in between customers

Also got to take my dad out for a spin:

Playing around with the Gallardo as well:

And here's a quick outside shot from the Ferrari:

A bunch of US Army Reserves guys stopped by on their lunch to check the cars out so I took them all out as well. Going to upload that video tomorrow because the file is huge and internet at work is much faster. It's worth the watch though to see all of their expressions!

My dad made it about half a lap at VIR in a 325 before he had had enough; a hot lap in a Ferrari would do him in.

Honestly it's a really tough choice. Guess it depends on what I'm in the mood for. The 430 was easier to slide, but was also probably faster when I wasn't trying to hoon in it. The Gallardo was just SUPER easy to beat the **** out of. You really couldn't get it wrong. It even had a bit of lift-off oversteer which surprised me. I guess if I had to choose, I'd go with the Ferrari based on looks, knowing that they were both a ton of fun to drive. Sound definitely goes to the Lambo though.

that's not proper steering method, is it? letting your arms cross all the way like that?

The whole time I bet your dad was thinking "this little shit used to live in my balls and now he's driving me around in a ferrari."

Looks like heaps of fun. How many gear changes would you do in the lap, could hardly see any, do you just pick a gear and that gets you around most of it?

I prefer it over shuffle-steering way better. If you have quick hands, it works great for a car with quick steering.

If it's ok for Kimi, it's ok for me. AKA "leave me alone, I know what I'm doing"

Yeah, no need to change gears. Left it in second. Course is designed to make sure gear changes aren't necessary. 98% of the public is too scared of the cars to push them at even 50%, but you get a guy or two each weekend that wants to be the next Stig, gets all ham-fisted, and accidentally starts grabbing downshifts while the car is bent out of shape.

Nice. I did the same thing in a new Boxster GTS, Cayman GTS, and 911 a couple of weeks ago at the CA Festival of Speed. Porsche was giving out free drives for Club members. Scared the sht out of two of my chaperones. The third applauded.

Was this the event Tim (timmay) was at?

Also, you hook your thumbs which if you ever go into a wall will probably break them.

But we're all just armchair critics. My S is still banged up in the body shop from my incident at TWS.

I was about to blast him on this too, but I guess he's the pro....

Was always told to shuffle hands, but then again I have always had to shift..

So many armchair critics indeed lol. Hooking thumbs are fine, that's why the steering wheel is shaped that way. If I'm going into a wall, I'll go ahead and take my hands off the steering wheel before impact so I don't break my wrists either. That old adage likened back to when cars didn't have power steering and the wheel could bite you back when you lost control. Watch race car drivers from any series: all have their thumbs in.

And I'm not a fan of shuffle steering. Never made sense so me when I don't have to take my hands off the wheel. I absolutely shuffle if I'm in such a tight corner that it's required.

Beat me to it. I honestly thought Lair wouldn't be caught dead in a 911 given his prior negative posts about them.

The sad part is most customers roll through the course at about 20mph, not remotely pushing the cars, and then go "whoa, these handle amazing!"

And the other customers try to push way too hard and are only saved by traction and stability control. So many people go into a corner hot in the mid-engine cars and then just add throttle when there is already no weight on the front tires. Then the car just goes straight, and their solution is to add even more steering input.

But for reference, here's a video I found from a customer on Friday:

Laugh as you may, but that's literally how 90% of the customers drive. And they love it!
