Conforti or aFe?

Looking to pick up CAI with Shark Injector. Should I go with Conforti or aFe?

They'll both be about the same. I had the Conforti and liked it, but the filter (330 at least) pushed up against my headlight wiring and got it oily.

Do you guys have any opinions on cold air intakes up around the Northeast US or anywhere where the winters are really cold? It seems to make sense for warmer temps and around the racetracks, but would the cold/freezing air cause negative effects and perhaps damage to the engine?

Well i live in CT, and I run the Dinan CAI which sits really low. I haven't had a problem with the intake and neither should anyone else. I don't think it will fuck up your engine.

Before I attempt to do this upgrade myself, I wanted to get some of your expert opinion on this. Having never installed anything in my car except a grueling past weekend of upgrading my fogs to HID, installing new P46 and wiring up the Angel Eyes, is the Conforti Cold Air Intake and Shark Injector upgrade a weekend DIY project or should I take it to a mechanic?

Any idea how long it will take?

Honestly you should be able to do both of those in about 3 hours, not even. It's extremley easy to install an intake, and I'm not to sure about the Shark Injector but I went over the directions and it seems also extremley easy. The hardest part of installing the intake, it removing the OEM one. But honestly you wouldnt need to take it to a mechanic, the directions and install are pretty straight forward.

truly, a cold air intake by either of those aint gonna do shit but make ur car louder.

not sure of ur automotive knowledge, but intakes as we as exhuast run on a pressure pardigm. to keep it simple, both the intake and exhaust need a certain amount of pressure to run right. naturally motors need more vaccum on the intake side than a boosted motor. however, if you have booste (turbo - super)charger, then te more air the better.
On our NA cars, give it a solid meterd air flow with good exhuast and you will feel the difference. Sadley, a solid header for us runs a few grand. trust me, I have forked over the coin for Dinan intake and Stage 2 software and really have not felt any gains.

but hey, do what you want. just remember that if you introduce more air, (hot air which it will be even though they call it a cold air intake) your ecu will likely retard the timing costing u power. it may sound cool, but ur buddy with the civic si will be out running you.

Well I coupled the Conforti CAI with the Shark Injector software upgrade and it doesn't sound or feel too much different. I don't know if it's my imagination or some subconscious wishing going on having dropped $700, but it does seem like I can push the car into higher RPMs without feeling the car straining. Would love to add a new exhaust. Gonna have start researching my options around that soon.

Overall, I'm please I went and did the install. My very first work on the car (next to doing lighting upgrade) and it went well. It took probably 2 hours for both upgrades.

Good info K2Elmore. I'm totally ignorant when it comes to engines but have learned a little bit from folks like you and others on this forum.

E46fanatics and E46Fantastic!!!

I realize that if I want more hps, the only way is to super/turbo-charge my car. And if I'm going to do that, I'm going to need a lot of other upgrades. I wanted to try the CAI and Shark Injector just to "polish" the feel of my 2001 325Ci during my 100 mile commute back and forth to work everyday.

Thinking about an exhaust upgrade and maybe a short shifter next...

Any recommendations on a good exhaust? One that doesn't sound like a Civic or motorcycle?

2001BMW325ci....I have a 2005 325ci and I just installed and AFE intake in my car...real easy to do...although a lot of people seem to say it does not do shit in terms of perfomance of the engine, I honestly feel it does. The car feels like it has a little more bite. I always felt like our engines we being held back and I hated when I tried to gun it and didn't get the results I wanted...now, with the AFE Intake, the car just seems to take off...maybe it is all in my head but I love my new intake...and the car sounds much better as well...

Do some research on ebay headers. They are cheap, and are fairly the same design as the Active Autowerke pieces supposedly. I have ebay headers which if I have yet to install and a Remus System. Its sound awesome.

If you're not going to get headers, go with the TSE3. Excellent performance, sound, and craftsmanship.

these mods will make your car faster...

I have a 2002 330ci. I have the shark injector installed and a remus exhaust and it makes a MAJOR difference. However, it's not like I am smoking porsche 911's now but the car is just sportier. Sounds sportier and performs sportier. There is more grunt all the way through the power band and you can really feel it. I have raced other 330's and it's not even close. I can't tell you what the gains are and I know they aren't huge but what do you expect..I spent a total of $1000 on my mods. You aren't going to get up over 300hp with that. My next purchase will be an CAI but I can't decide between afe or conforti.

Stay away from aFe. They have heat soak issues. Its more like a hot air intake.
