The OP probably squandered the $9 in a burger joint. So there's nothing more to see. All go home.

stop hatin' scum.

I've been busy with other things.

Winter has ended here and the weather is getting warmer and I'm slowly returning to DIYing in the driveway.

Uhm...
My next step is a trip down to the dealership to see how much the rear cushion will cost with the console inside.

4/4/09 UPDATE

Penetrating the fold down cushion and securing a firm anchor for the cupholder unit has proved dire.

During the interim I found an alternative spot for inserting a DIN style cup holder/storage tray unit. As seen in this 2001 740il sport sedan rear seat;

The spring out holder is inserted into the lower cushion itself and ejects horizontally outwards over the lower chasis spine hump.

I'm in the process of procuring this idea using this item from eBay

if OP is still going through with this picking up a spare armrest from a salvage yard or a part out to experiment on might be a good idea, rather than having one shot and if you **** it up then having to buy another one from the dealer

Sorry guys. I been so busy this year with the recession making everyone work harder at their 9-5s and the continuous cold and wet New York weather. So now that summer is here and the weather is finally better I'm making this my number one project this summer. So far I've experimented on an old cushion using the $9.00 Honda Accord flip lid holder but there seems to be no way to get it to sit firm in the cushion and work the lid. Also the din style horizontal holder needs a lot more internal support to work properly than the vertical-sit in insert. The best solution (on paper) so far based on previous trial and error runs seems to be inserting a roll top (Euro Tray style) holder onto the top of the cushion, folding back the leather around the tray and gluing the anchor points down to the foam center. This method allows the best and most secure access to the cup holder compartment and the roll top can be recessed into the cushion so that when folded up the armrest is flush with the seat back.

Here is an example of something I am going to be using from another car.

Embedded into the top of the armrest cushion;

^ that last idea is kinda nice. but if your back seat pasengers aren't using the cupholders, they have to put their arms on the hard "Japanese/euro-tray" thingy. with it sliding out from tip-top, the cushing is always there to use, and if needed the cupholders if/when needed. and armrest leather will always look clean, feel nice and appear uncluttered.

darn...I see what you mean.

To maximize the use of the upper cushion I would have to revert to an earlier idea that mimics the E36 and E38 armrest where the cup holders slide out horizontally
