My custom GPS install

I got tired of seeing my garmin on the dash or stuck to the windshield with wires draping down over the dash, looked too much like a cheap add on to me, so I did a little modding to a spare center vent that I bought. Let me know what you think. Phone pics so they may not look the best...

Did you divert the airflow before it gets to the gps? Looks good. I think the trade-off vs ventilation is favorable.

Very interesting idea there. How much does it affect your airflow?

I ran the power wire along with the center vent blend cable and in to the glovebox. I just did this tonight and plan on wiring in a female cigarette lighter plug behind the glovebox hooked to switched power. I hate air blowing on me so I usually have that vent closed anyways. The vent on/off door was not affected by this so I just leave it in the off position. I wanted factory GPS but the price is ridiculous, so this is my ghetto "in dash nav".

I posted about this on BF.C but i'll repeat what i said there and add some.

Not sure if i like the location, but ingenuity is nice. I'm interested in the DIY aswell, i may move my sattelite radio there.

Basically there are 2 sets of louvers, the frontmost for up down air direction and the rearmost for side to side. they just pop right out. I used one of the side to side louvers for a back rest after contouring it so that it sat at the same angle as the radio and the rest of the dash. I looked and looked for a GPS of the right size and color and this one was about perfect (had to be a garmin though). At first i just removed the frontmost louvers and set it in but it stuck out way too far and just looked like i taped it to the dash. Then I took out the rear louvers and it would sit in farther but the angle was all wrong so i broke out the dremmel and trimmed the vent surround (bought an extra just for this project) until it sat the way i liked it. It had to be flush and follow the flow and lines of the dash for it to look right to me. I made struts to go from the bottom of the inside of the vent assembly to the gps and used epoxy to hold it. I also epoxied the top and although it cant be seen I made a very small recess so that the power switch can be reached in case it ever needs to be reset.

wow... interesting i guess its almost a perfect fit however its unfortunate the frame of the GPS is so thick. i would do this if there was a GPS with more screen and less frame this way it would look abit more flush.
but very innovative idea for sure!

Wow...I think it looks great, but I think it would look so much better on the vent above the light switch dash...

I thought about that but it seemed like too unnatural of a place for me to look, I did take safety into consideration and it just seemed much more natural for me to look towards the center than off to the left.
