Angry Nothing but problems with my 2000 328ci

First off,

I buy the car as is no warranty with 102k on it. Car ran fine, until the day after i bought it. Check engine light came on and Im ready misfire in cylinder's 1 and 6. Compression was, leak down test showed valves were fine, then we scoped the cylinder and saw that the cylinder was scortched! I have a used motor on the way as of right now.

Before this happen, I head a rear clunking noise when I shifted in 1st or 2nd gear! I dont even have to be moving, if im sitting stil - put the clutch in - and as soon as i move the shifter into 1st or 2nd I hear a clunk. It only happens the first couple times. Once i have moved the shifter into each gear a couple times, the noise goes away!

Any suggestions on what is next, once i get the motor put in. Ive read about the rear differential bushing, but ive never heard of it doing it while at a complete stop. Like I said before, the clutch works fine, its only when i go to move the shifter in gear. I really dont even have to put it all the way in gear, the noise is instantly once the shifter starts get in gear. Dead stop, or moving!

Any help would be appreciated, first BMW ive bought, and already nothing but problems!

Thanks again in advance

The only way to know if your subframe is ok is to look at it. Clean it and inspect for cracks. Is the clunk sound comping from the transmission itself or does it sound like it's further back down the driveline?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is only the beginning. Sorry to hear about the motor trouble, thats rare, but other maintenance stuff will be a problem.

While the motors out, overhaul the cooling system. Now will be the easiest time and you're car probably needs it. I'm sure other problems will crop up, but here's my list of what I've done or plan to do soon on my 2000 328Ci (purchased Feb. this year):

Immediately after purchase:
New DSC computer
New intake Cam Sensor
New Thermostat Housing
Oil Change

Within 4 months of purchase:
Water pump
Expansion tank
Trans cooler thermostat
All cooling hoses
Spark Plugs

In the very near future:
Front wheel bearings (starting to make noise)
Shocks and Springs (partly to lower and partly because they're almost worn out)
Front Control Arms
Front Control Arm Bushings
Rear Trailing Arm Bushings
Diff Bushings
Subframe Bushings
Guibo
Center Support Bearing (whining a little)

And I'm sure other stuff will come up. My car wasn't a bad example, but it was less than perfectly maintained. I bought it knowing that, and knowing I was buying a European car out of warranty...

sounds like the clunk is coming more from the transmission. I dont even have to put it all the way in gear and i still hear it just when i push back on the shifter (going to 2nd) or forward (going to first) 3rd, 4th, and 5th dont do it.

and once i put it in 1st and 2nd a couple times, it goes away and doesnt clunk anymore, until the next stoplight (or next time a slow down) then I have to put it in 1st or 2nd and does it again. sorry if its hard to understand, im having a hard time explaining it!

Bringing back an old thread here.

The same has been on for me.

Within of owning my car less than one year I have replaced:
-alternator
-power steering pump
-and EVERYTHING to do with my transmission(yes that means another 5spd trans, clutch, flywheel, hydraulic system)

I bought my car because I use to have a 91 318Is that I can the sh*t out of. It had to have 350-400k miles on it and the only problem I every had was a oil pan leak. I thought the integrity of BMW would continue through the years but it seems like the later models are just so damn stubborn.

When it comes down to it.......I love my car and when it run(well) it runs!!
