Whats the longest you have gone with no issues

My first couple of months were pretty tough but it looks like my car has finally settled down and is behaving. I am hoping I can make it to summer before anything else pops up.

What's the longest you have gone with no issues? And I'm not talking about when it was new so lets make this after 100k miles.

Post 100k, front driver window reg in March, fuel pump last month, now (120k) a bi-polar sunroof, and I'm hoping to limp through winter on my worn FCABs just because it's cold out lol. So I really can't complain!

Man that's not bad at all. If my car settles down and I only spend about $1500 a year from here on out I will be pretty happy. As long as I don't come close to a $400-$500 a month car payment I can stick it out. If that happens I would be in a new car. Of course that amount doesn't include oil changes, tires, or mods.

Really, from 105k when I got it to 124k now. The only thing that's actually broken is the thermostat and both lock actuators. All other parts replaced were working upon replacement.

You can really tell how a car was maintained after it hits 100K. I bought mine five years ago with 104K and no service records and it's averaged $100 a month for maintenance and repairs. Looking over my records I see that ten months is the longest that it's not required extra attention.

I'll have to check my records but this year was very very good. Only thing I think I replaced were all the pads/rotors.

Do you consider basic wear/maintenance items to be "issues?"

I've owned my car for three years, and based on my records the only things I've actually had to fix are an odd exhaust leak, a stuck front caliper, the valve cover gasket, FCABs, and a shot front wheel bearing. The caliper and front wheel bearing came up at about the same time and that's when I did the FCABs (which really weren't that bad) as well. I've done some preventative and routine maintenance, but nothing that was actually causing me any issues - so I guess I'm averaging somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 months between actual repairs? My total cost of ownership, not including routine things like brake pads, oil, tires, etc., is around $1100 over three years.

Since I've got 85k miles on the car and intermittent thermostat code, I'm about to do a cooling system refresh just for the hell of it. I've also got what appears to be a leak in a CCV breather hose, so I'm going to replace that system too. While I'm at it, I'm replacing some other gaskets. Neither problem is actually affecting drivability or causing a noticeable loss in oil, but the car is old enough that I consider replacing a bunch of rubber parts to just be normal maintenance.

Brakes, tires, oil changes, etch shouldn't really count. But valve cover gasket, stuck caliper, and wheel bearings would count.

If we're not counting things that we're supposed to change, I really only get a real issue a year or so for the past 4 years. I had a no start no crank issue earlier this year, but it turns out my angel eyes were causing a parasitic drain at start because the relay fuse malfunctioned. But, I did get a pretty bad brake booster leak and a master cylinder failure that I sorted a few months ago.

I purchased my car in September 2012 (93,000 miles), and have had the following issues:
  • Glovebox wouldn't open -fixed at no cost.
  • 2800 rpm stutter - had the DME reflashed $85
  • DISA chatter - filled the worn area of shaft/flapper with epoxy $7
  • Scratched hood by closing garage door on it (self inflicted) $525
  • Oil on garage floor: OFHG leak - $7
  • Oil on garage floor: PS rack leak - $280
  • Rain leaks onto my left leg from where the top seals against the windsheild - haven't figured this one out yet.
  • Slow coolant leak. Not bad enough to hit the garage floor, which is my criteria for fixing leaks. I just keep adding coolant. I think it's the water pump, and I hope it stays the same until my next cooling system overhaul.

I've performed the following maintenance items:
  • Cooling system overhaul (first thing performed after purchase)
  • Replaced rear brake pads/rotors
  • Replaced tires (twice)
  • Changed transmission fluid
  • Changed differential fluid
  • Replaced front control arms, LCABs, and struts.
  • Replaced rear shocks
  • Several oil/filter & air filter changes

All in all, issues are secondary to maintenance, on a cost basis. I'm averaging around $100/month on "upkeep" items (issues + maintenance). Currently at 134,000 miles, so it's not bad on a per mile basis.

Edit: car, not drug.

This is not fair. Mango will easily beat us all. His car NEVER has problems due to enthusiastic PM.

I really should buy a new battery and alternator as preventative maintenance but part of me wants to see how long I can go with my currents ones.

Looks like I'm not as lucky as the others I bought my '02 325Ci with 14,000km back in 2006 as a CPO from the dealership. Flash forward to 2014 at 47,000km. Here's what I've had to repair/replace so far:

Steering rack (creplaced under CPO warranty)
Radio (broke power button, replaced under CPO warranty)
Passenger side window regulator (replaced under CPO warranty)
Control arm bushings (replaced twice now with genuine parts)
Amplifier in trunk (replaced with used one from ebay)
All four 6 1/2" stock speakers (foam disintegrated, repaired)
Steering column guibo (replaced with new)
ABS/ASC control unit (internal failure, replaced with new)
Front wheel speed sensor (replaced with new)
instrument cluster (all gauges and LCD died, repaired)
Driver side seatbelt tensioner (airbag light, first used repair kit, then replaced with new)

This doesn't include maintenance items like belts, air, cabin and fuel filters, brake rotors and pads

Current issues:

Sagging headliner and pillars
M dead pedal rubber insert crumbling
Peeling interior trim
Leaking valve cover gasket
Leaking power steering fluid reservoir gasket
Airbag control unit (airbag light, module cannot be read by INPA or PaSoft. New unit from ebay on the way)
Passenger side door lock actuator (does not lock/unlock with console button, locks with the key)
Passenger side autofold sidemirror (no longer folds. motor works, but gears are broken)
AC Blower sometimes stops (final stage resistor?)
AC compressor (whining, "chewbaca" sound when engaged)

Haven't had any cooling issues yet, but I'm not going to wait for it to break down. I'll be replacing the cooling system components in 2015 as well as the belt tensioners (basically, everything that broke down in my E36 325 and got me stranded). Might replace the fuel pump too.

Knock on wood that no other electronic modules get toast (LCM, EWS, DME, GM5)

Bought new car in '04 and now have 110K miles.
Special ordered without problematic sunroof.
Aggressively PM since new.
Replace wear items before they wear out.
Tires, bushings, couplers, sensors, etc.
PM'd cooling system and CVV.

Alternator failed three years ago.
Injectors leaked four years ago.
Mouse fur gets re-glued once in a while.
Victor Reinz VCG leaked.

I laugh when Consumer Reports says BMW's are unreliable.

If my car ever appears for sale, buy it!

Not sure why all the troubles you guys are having. I just traded my 2005 325i (119k miles) away for a 330ci. But that 325i I bought in 2007, and had it till 2014. The only real issue I had was the DMTL pump current leakage. Needed new DMTL pump and rubber grommets. Replaced 3 of 4 window regulators. Then I ran over a curb to tear out my temp sensor. So in 7 years, I spent less than $1,000 on non maintenance items. I changed the oil every 3-5k miles. Rotated tires every 6k miles. Turns out, if you take care of your car, it will take care of you.

In the end though, most of you have bought your cars after 2-3 other owners who didn't care about them, owned them.
