Christmas eve I go to talk to a WW2 veteran who was a mechanical engineer. He told me about they would send one man to go diffuse mines and everyone would back up, and sometimes they would actually plant secondary traps underneath the mines. Then he said the Germans had mines that would shoot 15 feet up in the air before exploding, and then gave a sigh, "there was no way to hide from those." He can also play the piano incredibly well even when too drunk to stand. Awesome guy.
