It's pretty interesting. You can buy aftermarket ring and pinion sets with slightly different load ratings for moar powarrr. Mostly I just like the visual effect that you get from looking at a spiral bevel gear.

These are the ones I know about for E46s:
3.46 = 45/13 (non-M)
3.62 = 47/13 (M3)
3.91 = 43/11 (Motorsport M3)
4.10 = 41/10 (Motorsport M3)
