So decidedly, unequivocally French it makes my teeth hurt.
It's not a gourmet dish, it's peasant food. In french it's "pain perdu" which translates to "bread that is lost" or stale bread. Peasants would soak their stale bread in egg, sugar, and other things to soften it up and then fry it in butter.
