I painted the rotors on my car, remember? Typically with Lexus and Toyota, the shims are separate parts. With BMW they're preinstalled.

I did an oil change on my brother's car last weekend. It was a struggle. We couldn't get the oil filter out. It's between the exhaust manifold and an engine mount with a fan in front blocking any good access you'd have if you have the tool.
