Idk. All I know is RPM used to jump 1000-1500 RPM when going it moderate throttle at highway speeds without a downshift. It doesn't do that any more no matter what conditions. If I give it any throttle, it kicks down to 4th and I get the jerking.

Nope. The transmission control unit controls the various clutch packs within the transmission, but the torque converter is on its own, as I previously described.

I'm confused as to what the problem you are having is now.

Isn't the stall speed of the transmission different than the lockup?

Could it be a timing issue?

It could be, so I want to get a data logger on it and see, just to be sure.

The torque converter has a stall speed, which is a mechanically fixed parameter based on the design of the unit and the fluid used. Optionally, a torque converter can have a lockup function as well to increase efficiency like when on the freeway.

The transmission doesn't have a set lockup, just clutches controlled by the TCU.

Yeah, when it comes to the software and signals system of the E46, I don't think there are many people that compare.

So what's the issue with what I said? It's constantly locked up on the freeway and won't unlock, but only give a hard downshift into 4th.

The Cobb AP is a nice data logger (among other things), but isn't good enough for a BMW given how ricey it is.

Could be something wonky with the TCU software. Have you tried to reset it?

$900. Just lunch money

Does the E46 have any good datalogging options other than an OBD cable and a laptop?

Briangle, I take back part of what I said. The torque converter lockup can be controlled by oil pressure from the transmission, which can be controlled by the TCU.

You said that the problem isn't happening anymore. Did it stop after the TCU reset?
