oh and that process you described involving the layer of protection is how stainless steels are actually rust resistant. it is a chemical reaction involving steel, chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum(the most common) and some other trace elements usually causing an oxide reaction to coat the steel protecting it from further damage.
