Get an M20. You might be able to find a block in need of a rebuild for free (I have one), parts are cheap, and if you screw up, no big deal at all. Building a test stand to actually run it is also trivial.

how much would a s54 swap cost anyway?
cost for parts... the engine, transmission, all the necessary wiring harnesses and such... anything else?
and estimate on the labor?
