Yeah, well kind of. I still love the car, but it has 170k miles on it and I want something a little bit more faster and fun...and that doesn't have a ton of miles.

good question i think he was the one cramped in New York recently, i think...

so i was reading up on narrow vs wider tires and i have determined: **** all that reading with no simple answers. :p

I would like to know if in real world circumstances are wider tires generally better than narrow ones. Or since there are so many factors what are the pros and cons to each.

my findings are as follows:
1). contact patch = weight/tire pressure (A 195 tire has the same contact area as a 265 if all other factors remain the same. That simply does not make sense to me when applied to real world tires.)

2). wider tires are better for turning and narrow tires are better for straight line action.

3). wider tires are heavier which make for more rataition mass

To get an idea of the impact of lighter wheels, take your vehicles weight and divide it by your HP. This will tell you how much weight each HP drives. Say you have a 100 hp car that weighs 2000 lbs. Works out to 20 lbs/hp. So cutting 20 pounds from your car would be the equivalent to improving your engine by 1 hp.

Now this isn't really a comparison of apples to apples because the wheels are rotational mass. I think the conversion is roughly 4:1 so if you cut 20 pounds of wheel mass it is the same as cutting 80 pounds off the car.

moment of inertia varies as radius^2, and thus the effect of tires with a 12" radius is completely different than wheels with a 7.5" radius which is completely different than rotors with a 5.5-6" radius which is completely different than hubs and axles with a radius of 3" or less.

tire relative importance is 12^2 = 144
wheel relative importance is 7.5^2 = 56
rotor relative importance is 5.75^2 = 30
hub/axle relative importance is is 3^2 = 9

And then you have to compute the energy used to accelerate the non rotational mass vs the rotational mass to see the benefit.

4). wider tires disapate heat better than narrow tires which make for lower running temps. this could be good or bad depending on the optimal range of each tire.

5). wider tires just look alot meaner than narrow tires. meaner = cool. Life thought me that.

6). wider tires are also more costly than narrow tires. wide = bad. being a cheap a$s thought me that.

this is way too an intelligent question so my only response will be TLDR.



but really there are a lot of factors even vehicle horsepower to maximize traction. So which car do you want wider tires for and why? Square set up or staggered?

Wider tires are also better at catching nails on the freeway.
