Come to think of it, besides the oil leak, the intake boot could be a big deal. I mentioned to raf and he was able to witness it, sometimes when I hit the gas to rev, it would be sluggish and almost not move the engine, the next, it would rev perfectly fine.... might be a vaccum leak huh....

Yep, sounds like you have big time intake problems. Pinging on M54s sounds like a very sharp tap, like a marble hitting the manifold. It'll produce that reverberation you heard in the exhaust, too.
Besides a leak, I would look at the DISA. It's not easy to do a DIY check, but if someone local with the BMW software can help you out, they can actuate the flap to tell you if it's working. The o-ring around is also a potential leak. The good news is that it isn't atypical, so you've a pretty clear diagnosis path.

So odds are chad needs to replace his intake boot and some back lines to get rid of vacuum leaks. Then hopefully his CCV/DISA is good or in need of replacement without anything else being severally wrong or difficult to replace.

The pinging should be worst at idle. The more air the motor needs, the less of a problem a vacuum leak becomes.

But yeah, the DME will try to compensate for the problem, e.g. retard timing, add fuel, etc. It might fluctuate, or it might disable a cylinder, so it won't even be consistent if the motor is shut off and restarted.
