I don't get it. I mean, I understand they deal with a ton of parts.... but if you are working in the parts department, you should know what the hell most of that stuff is.

The guy at the dealer by my house knew what the hell I was talking about when I told him what I was doing, I didn't have to give him a single part number...... then when it was all said and done he was like "looks like you have your weekend all planned out with this stuff" .... that is the way a parts dept should be.
Yeah there is one or two at that dealer that is fairly knowledgeable. They will hook you up to if you ask.

They're all individuals, just like everyone else.

I think he hooked me up a little because i was like "O.k. what's the damage? Because I know how much these OEM parts are online and how much you guys really charge" ..... it helped that I had my sheet of paper with all the part numbers and prices... and made it visable on the counter...

but at the end of the day, I needed them and couldn't wait for online stuff and they know that......

basically you want bmw parts to be like mercedes parts. at mercedes, you have guys that are only on the register, and they know all the parts and somehow know most of the part numbers by heart. they get paid a lot too. then there are guys that just go and get the parts (using a numbering system unrelated to the parts).

at bmw they do both. so most guys just remember the numbering system, and look up what they don't pick up often. so basically anything that is not oil/brakes/fluids they don't know jack lol plus bmw doesn't make you sign the stuff you pick out. so if you get it wrong for the customer, it doesn't matter. at fletcher, goes against your accuracy rating, eventually you get fired.

at least that was my experience working at both parts dept.

Interesting. When is a part considered wrong? When it comes back to the counter from the bins or when the customer tries to return it because it doesn't fit?

returns cause it doesn't fit, or when the part doesn't match the part number that's on the paper.
