got stuck behind an accident this morning and was sitting idle for a few minutes, right as I was getting past the accident my temp guage was getting close to red. As soon as I started driving and moving over to pull to the shoulder, the temp went back to normal.

That would be it then, funny I just swapped a fan clutch this weekend too it's suprisingly easy now that I have the right tool for it.

Could be fan switch in lower hose too. Next time test at idle again and if it overheats, turn the a/c on (make sure the green a/c light is lit) this should activate the fan even if the switch is broken. If the car cools down, then the actual fan works and the switch is busted. If it still runs hot, then it could be the switch in lower hose.If you are auto, it could be the fan clutch.

Or you can just turn the a/c on and see if the fan comes on. I believe you can also turn on the fan remotely using diagnostic software like INPA. Many ways to skin that cat.

Could be air in the system too.

I made the fan clutch comment because both have similar symptoms.

i want to get BMW parts for the cooling system overhaul ... but the cost difference is getting significant enough
plus i don't know how much longer i'll keep the car (as my only car)
i need to keep the car at least another year or two ... and as long as it's running well, i want to just keep it as a second car even if i get a new car
so... i will probably end up going with aftermarket parts

I would check if you haven't already

BMA parts & RM european aside from tischer and pelican.

They may have more options and better prices most times, also free shipping over 75$ in orders from BMA.

BMA charges CA sales tax
RMeuro has higher prices
Autohausaz looks like the overall winner with no sales tax for CA and free UPS ground shipping

ecs seems to have the best price for genuine bmw window regulator
even with shipping, a few bucks cheaper than autohausaz

i insist on getting OEM for window regulator because the one time i went cheap with an aftermarket part, it broke in 3 days and i had to replace it again
afterwards, i noticed that the aftermarket part was designed a little differently ... the cable was held differently and that's where it broke

If only ECS were local to us on this side pick up would save you a lot of cash. I may be in orange county this weekend coming up actually I might be able to pick up if you aren't in a rush.

if they're local, they'd have to charge sales tax
so it becomes a wash

...
pick up what?
