Need help identifying OIL LEAK.

I think it's leaking about 1 qt every 2,000 miles. There's an oil spot on my driveway. My car has 143K miles and I changed the valve cover gasket at 101K miles. Any help is appreciated.

Where else can it be leaking?

Does this picture help at all?

I'm having the same problem. I took these pictures today.

From below, the cover showing signs of an oil leak:

After removing cover, I snapped this picture:

A close up of previous picture:

Another pic of 'oily' area, same area.

Am I missing something here?

I just noticed we're all from Texas...

Maybe it has something to do with the roads...

It's probably your Oil filter housing gasket like others said. It took me an our to change mine. Do it even if it isn't it, because it'll go out eventually. Once you've gotten the housing off you'll really be able to tell where the leak is coming from.

I'm at 77K.

It took you an hour? Sounds easy enough. Any DIY with pics?

No DIY, but I could take another look at it and do a quick write up if there isn't one available.

Here were my before pics.

Actually, I did write this on bimmerforums, but it was after the fact. I'll try to dig up what pictures I did take, but I dropped the camera during the install and broke it.

It's much simpler. It could be done in 20 minutes. I took an hour because I cleaned the **** out of the housing and completely removed it from the car. It doesn't need to be done though.

I:

Popped hood
Remove air filter lid and air filter (snaps)
Remove bottom piece of air filter (2 bolts) (I found it easier to move this way)
Remove small snorkel (pulls out)
Remove air ram (3 reusable rivet things)
Remove fan (One T-25 Torx bit screw and one more fake rivet)
Remove 2 bolts for PS resv. and push aside to shock housing
Slacken Alt belt tensioner (T-50 torx bit)
Drop belt
Remove two bolts from alternator and remove plugs
Wiggle alt. till it comes out. (I unplugged battery and alt.)
Remove 3 bolts from PS pump, drop down and set on sway bar.
Remove 6 bolts from housing, pull perpindicular to engine case off of the pins, and pull straight up through space of empty parts you made. The belt tensioner stays on the housing.

I removed way more than I needed to, but I was very annoyed with the mess of oil, so I took it all apart to clean it up.

Earlier cars came with a cover for the drain plug.

possible causes for the oil leak:

Oil filter housing gasket
Oil pressure switch
Vanos
Valve cover gasket
Oil pan gasket
Head

Thanks alot. I'm going to buy the gasket and change it out. It doesn't sound like a hard job. I've replace water pumps, belt tensioners, thermostats, etc... before so it's probably not that difficult to get to the oil filter housing.

Can I contact you if I run into any problems?

Oh yeah, I'm look at your pics of the engine splash cover and it's looks like it's leaking from the same spot.

I'm curious, the leak is mostly towards of the back of the engine, but the oil filter housing is at the front of the car. Is it running down the pipes and dripping in the back instead of just dropping right below at the front?

Like I said in the other guys thread, oil moves all over the place when you got wind in there going 80mph. I didn't believe anyone else either, but did it because it was cheap and farely simple, and also prone to failing anyways. My engine bay, including the other side of the motor was soaked in oil/grime, and I hadn't lost more than a whole quart yet.
