02 and newer 745

Ok so my mom has a 08 Buick Enclave and I've been trying to convince her to get a used 745 because I think the Buick is going to fall apart as soon as the warranty is up, and she would probably enjoy a BMW alot more. Anyway, my question is how reliable are higher mileage (60k-80k) 7 Series, Its not really the cost of the repairs that Im worried about because I can do them myself and parts aren't expensive, its that I dont want it to be breaking down all the time and leaving her stranded, and yes I would obviously check all the maintenance records.

we have owned 3 of these.. the 2003 and up are the ones to get, 2002 are all lemons. with that being said. maintenance is not much. My E39 M5 is about triple the price of maintaining our 745i (now at 70k miles). The 745 is a bit more than an E46, but not much.

My friend has one of these and it spends more time in the shop then him driving it... I personally would get an 02-05 M3 instead and if that's too fast go for a newer 3 series 06+ or an 04+ 5 series....

I would love to get an M3 but Im looking for a car for my mom and I dont think M's are really her type, the reason why I say 7 series is because for some reason she likes really big cars.

+1 They are complete garbage

The 02-03 had horrible, horrible transmission problems. We stock the transmission... that's how many we sell. 02-06 also have a bad transmission oil pan and mechatronics. In our shop, we probably do at least 1 trans pan per day. Honestly, they really do spend more time in the shop than on the road. The later years being 07-08 we haven't seen much, but then again they don't have that many miles on them

Electronically, they need programming every other day (not literally) for comfort access, passenger seat mat for airbag, nav, audio, name it.

When we go to BMW school for routine training, it's always a common joke to make fun of the E65/E66 vehicles... do NOT buy one. Buy a CPO'd E60 and avoid 06-07 E90's.

In the end, remember this is BMW's "test" car. The 7 is always the first out with all the new gadgets, and then the 5 gets them, then the 3 and so on. All the best working parts of the 7 make it down to the 3.. usually in better working form than found on the 7.

My friends mom has an 04' 745il and the thing does weird stuff. It is just randomly putting itself into park or reverse when she is driving, scary haha. Dealer says it is a bad steering sensor and bad wheel sensors? It has also had complete failure of the traction/ stability system. The thing only has 55k miles I just can't believe that amount of stupid problems they have with it. Just get a nice 04'+ e60, has most of the technology of the e65 with less issues.

Im sorry, but having an Aston Martin DB9 on the drive and not driving it is a bit like having Keira Knightley in your bed and sleeping on the couch. If youve got even half a scrotum its not going to happen.
