Tires**225/40R18 on 18x8.5 possible?

I obtained some new rims. They are 18x8.5 (all 4) with a 40mm offset.

I have a year 2000 328i

Purchased 225/40r18 tires, went to dealer and they won't mount them. They say the rim is way to wide for a 225 and they say the proper size would be more like a 255, but that would cause them to rub.

I have called tire-rack and another local tire company, and they both say the tire is capable of fitted a 8.5 wide rim and there is no safety risk.

Has anyone else done mounted a 225/40R18 on a 18x8.5 rim.

I just am worried since the dealer won't mount it for me.

Any advice would be helpful.

My rears are 18x8.5 with 225/40/R18 tires. Its common enough.

Yeah, I had 225/40/18's on 8.5" Hartge rims - standard setup - no problems what so ever! a 255 will also fit on the rim (255/35/18 was my setup in the back), but just go ahead. I also had the same off-set and no problems with rubbing what so ever - just find a shop where they have more sense!

I've been running a 225/40/18 on my 9.0" rears all winter. Don't go to a dealer just take it to a tire store.

+1 my 18x8.5 OZ were running with 225/40/R18 tires all around in winter mode

I've got 225/40/18's on 8 inch rims in the front and they fit the rim perfectly. I'm sure a 8.5 would not be a problem though.

I've got 235's on 8.5" rims, plenty of extra room.

If you want verification, you can often go to the tire manufacturer's website, and they provide a range of wheel widths for the tire you want to intall.

For once the dealer is correct. OEM 18 x 8.5" came with 255/35 18 tyres from BMW. You should have at least purchased 235/40 18, can you trade them back?

That's for a staggered rear. 18x8.5 square should run either 225 or 235

just goto a tire shop.... get them mounted elsewhere. The dealer is just going by the book, they hate going outside the realm or possibility.....they always play it safe. Atlease the ones here do. If other guys are running 225 on the 18x8.5, and they've had no trouble......then obviously it can work. Just go somewhere else.
