Solar freakin roadways!!

watched this vid in my fb feed, surprised it hasn't been discussed here yet. funny vid with more details on their site.

a full network of roads seems extremely expensive and highly improbable with the major shift in labor force but who knows.

my brain hurts every time i see this and i have to really refrain myself from calling my friends on facebook total morons for posting this thinking it's a great idea. such as colossal waste of money!

just use rooftops for solar! there is no need to tie it to our roads. and why reduce the solar efficiency because fvcking cars are driving over the pv surface. it's just so retarded to even argue about.

now if they could harness the kinetic energy from the friction of the rubber contacting the road, that would be sick, and 1,000 X more expensive lol

I think it's great for sidewalks and driveways especially in places where it snows, but as a road surface, hell no.

I cannot even imagine what would happen to this kind of road after one winter here.

Good idea for parking lots and driveways where there is a lot less traffic but a daily road? No way.

+1 on the sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots.

It would be such a cluster F to even get the project started. (funding)

They failed to address some major factors - ride quality/noise, visibility, and foundation. It's gonna sound like those little ridges they put on the side of the highway to wake you up, all the time. The sun is going to reflect off the glass and be horribly distracting, as well as the LEDs will not be visible during the day. And you can't just lay a bunch of rigid tiles down and start driving big rigs over it. It needs a substantial foundation, probably of concrete, on top of a bunch of sand and rock.

Not to mention what is gonna happen when these pieces of glass start shattering every time there is an accident or sharp impact?

I'm all for solar, but not on roads.

It would definitely be cool for sidewalks and driveways, what with the heating elements.

Interesting idea, but totally impossible to implement on a massive scale. There's no person or company or governement on earth that could devote that much capital to it. I'm not saying our infrastructure now is perfect (it isn't, and it's the platform I'd run on) but this would be a nightmare for so many reasons.

Neat idea in theory...totally impractical in reality.

We can barely get a decade out of ****ing asphalt and rocks! You think these are going to last any significant period of time? Terrible idea, and as was already said, rooftops are the key. They're elevated and NOT BEING RUN OVER BY 80,000 LB VEHICLES REGULARLY!

Realistically, I could see this being effective for breakdown lanes on major highways and parking lots only.

For actual roads, there are some key holes in the concept. For instance, tires. Pretty much the entire tire industry with all of its engineering experience and applied technology is geared towards rubber driven primarily on asphalt.

I'd be interested to see some tech that uses recycled materials to make an asphalt alternative that doesn't disintegrate so easily from harsh winters.

These videos are showing up on my FB feed about five or six times a day from various people. I just click "I don't want to see this" and forget about it. It's like people have lost the ability to discern between actual news and "here's something we think would be a good idea." Some people have posted videos thinking that these roads are being installed now.
