how to do a outdoor setup?
I want to do a setup in my parents backyard and every year I did it half assed, and always burnt something out.
I want to put about 8 speakers all around the back, but i want to be able to control/turn off certain sets at a time Do I need special cable for outdoors? I have an 800w 2 channel amp.. can i use this?

Niles Audio Outdoor speakers:

All you need is either a speaker selector box with impedence matching in it or a impedence matching volume control for every pair of speakers. Period. That is what they are for. Why would you 1 impedence matching volume control on two pairs of speakers??? You can run 24 speakers on 12 volume controls off a $300 receiver if you want.

you can do that if you want to run in and out of the house to adjust levels depending on how loud the yard gets during times of entertainment or you can zone your back yard out by placing weatherproof VC's at different locations. And the only reason I suggested multiple pairs of speakers on one VC is because they can be grouped together like a pool zone. If you have 2 pair around the pool you can raise or lower them all together. Whats the purpose of an impedence matched speaker selector with volume control and an impedence matched volume control???? All I am suggesting is multiple VC's in the yard, if he's breaking the 4 pair up in to 2 pair in each zone wouldnt it be easier to run your VC inline with the wire you have to run outside anyway and keep your VC as close to your speakers making volume adjustment on the fly a whole lot more convenient? And if they are 8 ohm speakers why couldnt you put 2 pair on one VC. Any good VC will go down to 4 ohms. Im speaking as if he is only going to have 2 zones in the yard not 8.

Easiest and cleanest especially if located in different areas or using different models of speakers is 4 impedence matching volume controls. 1 for each pair. It also allows you to easily add another set with another vol control later. Simple, effective, flexible, and protected. As far as the switchbox with built in volume controls, I wasnt saying it should be inside. Clearly with 8 speakers, he has protected areas outside. I dont like switchboxes myself, its just a simple solution.

I understand what your saying and def am not a fan of speaker selectors myself. Again I was under the impression that he was only going with 2 zones wich is why I originally said 2 VC's. As far as options for addition in the future I wasnt looking into that as he only said what he wanted now. And I know 8 speakers is not 8 zones. 8 speakers also doesnt reqire a 6 pair selector as pictured in your post. I was only trying to get him the most cost effective way of running 8 speakers with volume control at conveniant locations.

yes, you could do 2 volume controls with eight 8ohm speakers. really, you could do 1 volume control with eight 8ohm speakers if wired right. I just like controlling each pair indiividually myself.

I own a tiny custom home theater company. We specialize in mid range systems ($10K-$50K). I dont do any installs myself, but I am CEDIA certified. ![]() PS - I just got the NuVo WCP for my Grand Concerto system. It is soooooo badazz. It is an inwall keypad made into a 2 way wireless rechargable remote. All ipod, XM and Radio meta data, control every room together or seperate, it is awesome!
