again the only software tuning for the general public has already been released and tweaked for the non m3s by removing the speed governor, 7k redline, better throttle response, and 91 or higher octance threshold for advance spark timing..they cannot extract anymore from this mill. I mean the car comes with coil packs!

if your talking about removing the cats and then tuning it accordingly and tuning your car with mods to your own liking,

the shark edit is advertised to do that, and JC will cover all the aspects and R&D and set parameters on a safe and understanding level where consumers and gearheads-alike will be able to dial in their settings in a clear understandable way and be safe and when it releases and it will be the rock that everyone can compare and share with.

if you cant afford 2-3 or so hundred dollars for a shark, youre in the wrong car or a cheap mother &*(^*( who looking for free shi7

most ecu re-flashes are not that expensive, nor even required to make your car any faster than it is.

its only required when your making it off-road only..

I know youre new, and prob havent even really modded your car to the point you really need the software, other then clearing the catalytic inefficiency code light with the cheap headers your bound to buy.

ive done it, seen it and dynoed it.

I hate to be pessimistic, but you noob motherf5ckers have this high hope and think we're all against this common good fight for cheap affordable mods, if you want cheap shi7 slap on some ebay headers and cry about flanges and the great welds, the day some free laptop controlled tuning software in hacked pieces gets released, most you know-it alls will set the parameters so high and think your getting power by running rich and hacking and slashing the stock dme to crap and you'll end up crying on here about you turned your great running car to to crap by "tuning it" to run rich for extra ompth.


Lets

Leave the tuning to the tuners, becasue SO far the e46 market in tuning is not overpriced, and the shark edit will be here intime to save the hardcores like the OP by saving him from the dangerous first steps and trouble and downtime.

Hardcore yes. If you dont know already I am a experienced tuner (I have tuned supercharged GM cars and Turbo mitsubishis) before with great success.

What I am doing is FUN to me so my time is not wasted EVEN if the shark edit comes out (Which I am sure is going to be awesome hope its similar to the last tuning tool I used called hptuners)awesome tool.

I know the in's and out's of F/I tuning and NA tuning - Road and dyno tuning so I am not scared to tackle on what I am doing.

One more thing...there is absolutly no need to get angry at new people who are interested in learning. We all started somewhere....and being negative will only back people down and discourage people that are driven to learn and help out in this forum.

This is the first forum that I see this type of behaviors about tuning. The BMW DME is not different from any others just seems like the info learned from the few are kept secret and thats ok....because Im starting to understand the likes of the really smart tuners like JIM C .... the negativity is starting to impact me as well.

Why am I taking the time to do this and post here when all I here is "*****ing and complaining" instead of helping with development and research. Now there is time wasted right there...

Maybe I should just keep going and just take care of my project and thats it.

i was talking to the the other guy who quoted me.

i just asked you where you got your product since its an open discussion, and if anything said youd have easier time with your supercharger build if you wait or even contact jc for a release date before researching and tackling it alone.

there are many read and write programs out there that work for BMW

you will need a cord that supports it as well. I found all this a few years ago with trial and error. Works very well.

the problem is creating a definition and tables for the code and modifying the original .bin unit. That's what seperates BMW tuners from other tuners.

FYI half the people you listed that do this already - bought/sub it off one guy who did all the R&D. I am friends with said R&D guy. Don't beleive everything you read - Marketing is powerful =).

i have flash tuning and custom maps for just about every BMW platform - I'm still organizing all of it.

I've been tuning for many years, BMW's as of recent venture. I own about 12 different $100 to $200 ODB2 Dongles, to flash different cars.

I have been asking about shark edit for a while now and so has everybody since summer of last year. Nothing...not a word from Jim C.

I find it very discouraging that after all these years of OBDII and nothing is out there for everybody to be able to use. I did say USE ... once the software is build and the code understood it still takes experience and special skills to be a good tuner.

If I had access to Shark edit I would be tuning BMW's right now like its going out of style and I am not scared of using my car for tuning as I am fully comftable tuning.

So far after my research I have found this:

1) Hardware to READ/WRITE ONLY to the DME. Apparently there is more then one but this one seems to be the most common: KWP2000+ with flasher software (its a clone from the original tuning toolmade in italy for europeen cars) but seems to work really well from the people I haev talekd to.

So first step is to pull the original bin file from the DME.

2) Waiting for the hardware I located a Stock original Ms43 file from a 2002 330i.

3) To read the file you need a software translator like: Tunerpro (free)

4) create or locate a XDF file to find maps. So far I have found 2 maps created by the owner of tunerpro that can be used to tweak to show the maps needed with the MS43 DME.

So much on the pros and cons of DIY tuning.... Honestly, I'm less interested in tuning than I am maintenance. Would be nice if there was a reasonably priced diagnostic tool that gave me full access to all of my car's systems. Not talking about some illegal hacked tool here. I'm talking something like Autoenginuity with BMW expansion. Unfortunately, nothing seems to exist for my ZHP with MS45.1 (if you know of something, let me know). A tuning tool would be nice for some but complete diagnostic coverage would be a real asset to the community.

Thanks, nice try, but it doesn't provide full support for MS45.1.

Here's their feature matrix for my application:
Module - MS45 on 330iZHP after 2003 (engine)
ECU Identification - Yes
Read Codes - Yes
Actual Values - No
Activations - No
Commands - No
Coding - No
I'm not looking for a code reader which is what this amounts to for me. I also contacted them recently about when/if they might be extending support for MS45.1. Based on their response, I don't expect anything in the near future.

Last year, Autoenginuity suggested they would have support at the beginning of this year. So far, nothing.

Is MS45.1 really all that difficult? I recall hearing something about encryption at one point. Is that the issue?

EDIT: sorry for getting slightly OT here. Anyone with diagnostic tool suggestions should PM me. General discussion of MS45.1 is probably relevant though.

The ZHP is a bastardized DME unfortunately. Auto Enginuity doesn't have anything on this program - just wait for their updates. This is early release.

its very attainable and is a great tool to have I agree. I do not believe it will be useful for ECU tuning however. I currentlyhave DIS, Inpa, Ediabas among other apps working well.
I need to read through this thread again, sounds real good at first glance, ive been looking for some DIYers willing to take some risks and dive into ECU tuning. This has been an interest of mine for quite a while. OP good job starting a thread and hopefully people are willing to contribute to thisproject and come up with a viable solution. There are going to be many hurdles along the way which is expected.. It is not the simpliest thing to do thats for sure.

MS45.x has RSA 512bit encryption. Newer cars RSA 1024bit! Cheap Bootleg/copy EOBD2 will not work period. You will end up buying a BDM.

BTW, just to let you all know BMW only garantees 14 flashes on DME. Even thou, you might get the tool to read/write on same DME slot thru OBD; some of you guys might end up locking a DME and .

I can confirm that I have seen this limitation on BMW dealer scanners for the limited number of reflashes.

I have located a few maps on my MS43 DME.

ITs not mandatory but to make it easier I'm in the process of creating a GUI interface (with .NET) to plot the found maps and be able to input new data.

I just checked JIM C website to see if he has any updates and WOW!! the project is still ALIVE.....he posted a wmv video of the shark edit last week.

JIM C has put an amazing amount of work on the shark edit its not easy to put together but he has done it.
