M5 and M6 would be balling /sarcasm..

MX5/6 sounds cool, but i'm sure that BMW would try to distance itself from rice rockets....

M5/6 xDrive?

he didnt mean a 4 cyl AND a turbo...he was saying BMW has had 4 cyl cars as well as turbo engines for years, just not in the US market. And the 1200hp car he's talking about was the M1...The M heritage started with a 4cyl, what defines an M car is a performance oriented car with a better suspension and engine than the standard version...also it has to have a manual, which is why there was never an M SAV in the past because BMW never wanted to put a manual in the SAV, but now with the SMG tranny they're ok doing it. It isn't an abomination, it's evolution. You can't make a reliable I6 or V8 that can compete in the current horsepower race.

I couldn't find the 1200hp 4cyl, turbo engine that's been talked about. The only thing I could find, however, was a that M used the 3.5 6-cyl for their race version of the M1 and it was turbocharged; producing roughly 850hp.

The only reason I'm not 100% for this video (below) is that it was taped in 2003 and i can't tell if they just swapped the engine or if it truly was an original. (it does sound very nice, though).

There really should be, especially with Audi and Merc (A8 and S63/65 AMG, respectively) have been making their own version of a large sports saloon for a while now. Closest BMW came was with the E38 or E65/66 witht the larger engine and a sport package. Then again, Alpina also made a B7...but still not BMW's own "M" car.

How is the M coupe not truly an M car? It has the same engine as the M3 and is lighter. It is also a sports car. Runs faster times than the M3.

yeah the m3 is just a 3 series with a sports package, so not really an M car.

i'm really diggin' them... i loved the e53 (right?) X5's... although our first model year 4.4i ended up being a money pit, the car was a beast. tons of low end torque and it looked sexy as hell...

i give them two thumbs up.
you guys lose sight that this is a business, and if they didn't put their foot in the door with forced induction and SUV's they would be making less money. well played IMO

These are sooo dumb. It would be one thing if the M division had produced an E92 M3 CSL, and were working on the M1 (Audi R8 competitor)...but they are not.

Congrats. Way to dilute the M brand for Soccer moms BMW...

There is a lengthly, informative discussion on this topic on M3Post. I'll search for it and link it here. It's a great read!

For everybody claiming that these vehicles are useless, an objective perspective might do you some good. As far as the CSL arguments are concerned, BMW is smart for choosing not to produce that car. The E46 CSL was a gem of a vehicle, but it was expensive and didn't sell well overseas. In our current economic climate, the CSL would not sell well in the states. Business sense is an attribute at BMW, and is the primary reason why they aren't struggling like other automotive manufacturers.

My Ride: Your girlfriend :)
Audi has the S-line and Mercedes has AMG so BMW has to throw in their M division into the mix and add it as an upgrade. Similar to what the new 135i has, it is branded with M-Sport. Basically make everything marginally better and up the price. I think the X6M looks good from the front but the rear makes it look like the designers started out with a coupe at the front and another team was working on an SUV from the back. They sort of met in the middle and well ... this is what happened.
