Bavarian Auto - $$ to ship to Canada

Just a head's up
I ordered a few items from BavAuto, thought it was a decent price until I added up all the extra charges:

Original price $151.85 US x 1.3 = $197.40 Cdn (approx)
Shipping $31.09 US x 1.3 = $40.41
Duty $9.70 Cdn
GST $24.13 Cdn
Brokerage Fee (UPS) $41.05 Cdn <-- total ripoff

Grand Total = $312.70 Cdn

OMG

thats the last time I order from ANY US store that uses UPS !!

I can to the same conclusion myself. $50 UPS brokerage fee. The best part is that when you look at the tracking number you can tell that the part was shipped across the border once, back to the US, back to Canada and then finally to my door. Why don't this get thier stuff together and reduce the cost. And to all the US retailers out there... give us Canadians another option over UPS. I would take US ground if it took a month over the stupid fees that UPS charges.

If you don't have any other choice but UPS, then go with UPS overnight. All UPS overnight shipments automatically include free brokerage service. Seeing as how you'd be dinged the $50 for brokerage via ground service, if the difference for air vs ground is under $50, then you're still ahead.

I agree with the NO UPS option. I just bought some sht from duluth and got dinged 35 bucks. 50%!!!!! of the value of my order. Well I was none too please. I called and emailed Duluth and UPS and told them bought these outrageous fees. At the end of the day nothing gets changed until consumers raise some hell. I told Duluth that I just cant buy from them anymore until they get a different shipping option. They thanked me for my CANDOR and said they would pass my comments onto management.. The dude at UPS basically said theres nothing they could do and he himself has been charged those fee's.. So IMO speak up and tell bavauto that you can't and won't buy from them till they get another option.

Peace and hard drivin

Talking

Yeah we are definitely getting ripped off in Canada with absolutely no options for buying parts in Canada...
In the past, i noticed that if i get items shipped from US via air i don't get any additional costs (GST, Brokerage, etc...) not sure why that happens - may be brokerage already included in delivery price?)
Having said that.. just ordered some parts from Jlevisw.com using fedex ground - will see what extra costs i am going to get...

I absolutely refuse to ship with UPS to many extra costs at your door and I don't like their delivery service. I was going to order $650 in maintenance parts from BavAuto last week but they flat out refused to ship anything other than UPS, so I bought from BimmerSpecialist and was very happy with the service. BimmerSpecialist shows pricing in Canadian dollars and they are flexible on shipping options (no at your door fees).

I used corner73 and was happy with the service, although they don't carry many replacement parts.

USPS is the only way to go. I won't deal with retailers who only use FedEx and UPS, they're total ripoffs.

Strange that BavAuto refused to ship by US Postal Service. I ordered stuff from them all the time between '92 and '04 using the mail. $5 handling fee from Canada Post plus duty and gst. They even shipped some exhaust pipes for my '80 323i by USPS.
UPS, on the other hand, would take a week longer to deliver and usually tried to drop the parts off either before I got home from work or after I had left for work.

Noodle, that's fine if you live near the border. I doubt, however, that you'll find someone from Edmonton racing to the border to save $40 in shipping and brokerage. Not to mention, having a po box doesn't help if you're buying off ebay. Last I checked, Canadians couldn't have an American address on their paypal, unless they were using an American credit card.

Never said it would be suitable for everyone. Just trying to benefit those reading by what I do. I have communicated to ebay sellers that I want to ship to the address in my link and most have been co-operative. If people want to do their own thing, then that's their prerogative.

I came across this from another forum and thought it would be good info to share. Please note, I have NOT tried this for myself.

As everyone knows, UPS likes to charge you up the ying yang for brokerage fees when shipping a package from the United States. Well things are about to change, when you follow the "How to stick it to UPS" guide. You'll need a UPS warehouse depot, to find the nearest one phone UPS(the number is in Step 2) The address for the Calgary UPS warehouse depot is 3650 12th St. NE. And you'll need a Customs office in your city unless you're willing to drive to the nearest city with them. Here's how you do it:

*DISCLAIMER* I take no responsibility for any problems you may encounter using this guide. I'm just tell you how i do it and it's worked for the past 5 times i've done it(everytime).

Step 1. When buying online, whether through Ebay/forum/online store, and the seller will only ship through UPS. Ask the seller when shipping the package to state that the buyer(you) will clear customs for the package.

Step 2. Ask the buyer to get a tracking number to you asap. Without this number, you run the risk of paying UPS their bogus fees. Once you get the number, phone UPS(1-800-PICK-UPS) and tell them that you want the package to be held at your local UPS depot and that you'll be clearing customs yourself.

Step 3. When the package arrives at UPS they'll either phone you or deliver a yellow delivery tag to your door. If UPS shows up at your door with the package tell them that you arranged to pick up the package at the warehouse. If they refuse and tell you that you need to take it now, they're full of it.

Step 4. Go to the UPS warehouse depot office, in Winnipeg it's on the other side of the building than the shipping/receiving doors. Go inside and tell the receptionist that you arranged to clear the customs fees on your package. She'll then ask for ID, the price of the item, proof of purchase(auction/paypal receipt or an email from seller stating the cost and origin), and for you to sign some papers. Then she'll give you the customs papers.

Step 5. Take the papers to your Customs office, hand them over to the agent and tell him/her that you're there to clear your package. Be nice, because they have the power to make this whole experience a living hell. They'll tell you how much you owe, then you pay the cashier, and they'll give you back your papers.

Step 6. Go back to UPS but to the shipping/receiving doors and hand them the customs papers. They'll go and get your package.

Step 7. Take your package home and make sweet sweet love to it!

Yup, I once went through that nightmare as well... Bought an awesome deal hard drive from ebay for something like 45-50 bucks... really cheap. Until f$%^& UPS added about 40 bucks on top of that (they have some minimum fee which is like total theft in the daylight, Canadian gov't took only like 5 bucks GST!). Called them to ***** and argue to no result... The lady on the other end didn't give a crap that it makes no sense to charge me 40 bucks on a 45 dollar item... "Had you been at the border yourself.... We had to 'receive' the package for you, hence the charge" she told me.... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH FFFFFFFFFVVVVVUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK YYYYYYOOOOOOUUUUUU, I thought LOL
