Exclamation Need opinions plz... M5 or M3 or another 323i and X5 together

Ok this is whats up. my reenlistment is up. i can do it. but im having problems to decided on what and where to go. I will start if i reenlist now i can get about 8k for 5 years. only giving me 3 years extra on my contract. but i only get money. and the army can tell me where to go. which isnt all that bad caz in someways. but if i want til nov. i get about 4k for 4 years and get to pick a place to go for 2 years of the 4 years. but still can go anywhere after the 2 years.... enough with that here comes the cars. I need a family car. for my wife and the baby. now i have my 323i. but if i get the bonus i was looking around and can get a
1. 2000 M5 with 96k on it for 16k. great shape. and give my 323i to my wife
2. 2001 M3 with 70k on it for 18k. great shape. and give my 323i to my wife
3. 2000 323i with 90k on it for 7. good shape and a 2001 X5. and keep my 323i.

the only reason to get the suv and the 323i is caz my wife wants to do a his and hers bmw thing together. well i did bring it up and she want for it. the X5 will be for the family and we will mod the 323i together...

which would you go for... and if you dont have a wife or kids think if you did...

i cant pick!!!!!

I would, IMHO, get the M5. My reasoning behind this is that you're looking for a "family" car and most probably also want some sort of "weekend toy". As much as I do like the M3, I would probably still get the M5 and maybe do some modification to the suspension (most people will tell you the the M3 is a lot more nibble in the corners). By the looks of it, you could save the 2k on the M5 and do a little suspension work and still have a family car that's extremely fun to drive. On a day-day driving experience, the M5 would probably be more comfortable/convenient/easier to drive. Not saying an M3 couldn't, but 4drs and a big V8 are a little bit of a nice perk!

The M5 is the best, but please be aware that maintenance on that car is intense. It's not a regular BMW in terms of maintenance @ all. Non M BMWs can be costly to maintain, but that M5 is no joke. After $2000 in 3 months I sold mine for an M3, still not cheap but cheaper.

I'd go with an X5 as a family car. 5 and 3 series don't have a lot of room in the back. As for maintenance.. X5 is probably cheaper to maintain then either Ms but still can be quite expensive...

M3 and 323i. M3 is alot of fun and looks more sportier than the M5 and the wife can drive around the 323i for errands and such

Yeah but X5 + another 323i is not equal fun to an M. Well its has to go by your driving preference. More no. of cars or more driving pleasure

Tell us about yourself. Do you enjoy driving fast, or getting around comfortably? I drive a 2000 BMW 323i, and IMO, its a slow heap! It was fun at first, but honestly i can barely keep up with a Civic SiR anymore. The ~200hp i'm pulling now just isn't as good as it was 8 years ago. But I love driving fast at the track. On the other hand, my aunt and mother love the car, saying it's the most comfortable and smooth car they've ever been in. The M3 and M5 are both good cars, but seeing as you're even considering an X5, I can tell that you want a good daily driver. So just tell us what you're looking for in a car, and I'm sure there's people on this forum with experience with all those cars who can help out.

Everything I've ever read and heard from M5 owners is to avoid buying ones with high mileage. The cost of maintenance will kill you. Unless you're an Officer, you probably aren't going to make enough money to keep that car maintained and to mod it.

A good example is the Dinan CAI. For the E46 M3, it's $1399 and it comes with an Air Mass Meter. The E39 M5 CAI is $2499 and it is just the intake. Now, I know Dinan is expensive, but this is a general example that reflects the rest of the market. (although aFe has an intake for under $600).
My point is: the M5 is NOT a cheap car to maintain or mod. I did the figures on my own a while back and figured that the M5 was going to cost me 2x as much as my E46 M3 overall. For exhaust, you're going to spend anywhere from $1500-$2500 just for mufflers.

I'm just saying- I remember my days in the Army, and the money wasn't conducive to owning a car like the M5.

As for the X5, the models prior to 2004 are easier to mod since they didn't have Valvetronic, but the AWD system isn't as good. BMW introduced xDrive in 2004, which is basically the same thing as Audi's Quattro AWD. 2004 was a problematic year for xDrive, from what I've heard. It all depends on which X5 you want, but reports that I've heard have said that they have quirky electrical systems.

Also, have you ever considered splitting the difference and looking at an X5 4.6is or 4.8i ? They're also expensive, but tons of fun. It'd be a good compromise between an X5 and an M5, IMO.

i want a faster bmw... and i love the luxury and comfort of the bmw thats why i have it, but the problem coming is. my wife is wanting to get into tuning. littles things here and there and she wants use to have the same cars. so i was looking for another 323i so we could lower it and put some goodies under the hood. for her that will be fine. then the x5 would come in as the family vehicle. im a person that would rather have a rare car modded then a common car. even if the price tag is alittle high. the m5 or m3 would be nice but its not all about me anymore... and i hate to say it. but its true. and i could spend 15k on the car i have now and she wouldnt be mad at me. but if i bought another bmw like the m3 and gave her my hand me down car. she would be pissed. call it ***** wiped i dont care. but i would love more to put up in a 323i with 300hp then a m3 already there and ppl know it. then crusing in GA and going to the car meets and have both bmws. mine and hers. with mods and looking great. means more to me. i can get my bmw up and running there just gonna take alittle bit more time. but more respect from the car and the work will be given when its done. then just having a fast car to begin with. like the m3. anyone can go and get a m3 and have a fast car. its the true car lover to make what he got fast and nice.... i was just seeing what opinions i would get and see if there was anyone here to maybe change my mind and my girls but... not looking at the m3 or m5 now... would rather put my money in th e323i. and maybe then a swap... its all about the work and time you put in your car that matters to me... thanks peeps
