Yet another advice thread (540i vs 328i)

I know there's been a few of these, and ultimately, the decision comes down to me, but I'd love to hear some opinions from fellow fanatics.

I've got a 2000 328i with 116k miles, in GREAT condition. I love this car to death. It's my very first car (didn't have/need one in college) and just lucked out that it had all the options I wanted. It's not that easy to find a 5spd, with sport package. However, the E39 has always been special and I love German V8's.

I would take a hit trading in my 328i (value of the car dropped almost 4 grand in 1 year ), but that's not a biggie. However, I'd have to redo all the maintenance that has been done on the 3er (cooling, control arms and return it to stock) on the 5er.

Acceleration: 5er is a bit quicker
Handling: 3er obviously
Looks: Tie
Maintenance: 3er is cheaper to maintain, but I like to DIY

I don't push my car that hard so I don't ever get the most out of the acceleration or handling, which is why a 5er would fit.

If you were in my shoes, what would you do? Do you think it'll be worth it? Or is it going to be a big regret. Thanks

why don't you consider 545i instead, some cpo with reasonable price. you will have the v8 and warranty till 100k miles.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, I'm only looking to spend a few thousand bucks to get into the 540i, so the E60 is out of my price range. I've seen plenty of them well over 150k miles so I'm not TOO worried

Anyone else?

you could always look at a 2002 530i with ZSP and MT. Only a few 10ths of a sec slower than the 540, but the 540 does have that BEAUTIFUL V8!

Im sorry, but having an Aston Martin DB9 on the drive and not driving it is a bit like having Keira Knightley in your bed and sleeping on the couch. If youve got even half a scrotum its not going to happen.

Yea, but the only way I'd jump to an E39 would be because of that V8. Otherwise, my 328i is just dandy. This might be a sign that I should keep my car... this sketchy dealer said the car I was looking at doesn't even start.

Yeah, I would say stay if he says the car you're looking at doesn't start.

I'd say keep your car for a new 3 series...I though about getting an e39, but I can pick up a e92 for about the same price as a 2003 e39 with under 45k miles. I'd much rather have a e92 over a e39. Besides, I think the e92 has more room and is sportier.
