My Ride: comes with blow
Yes, a 1000cc sports bike as a first bike is a great way to die young.
I'm with you; I've been riding bikes longer than I've been driving cars, but my first sports bike (if I ever buy one) would definitely be a 600cc, and still I'd be taking it easy for a while.

Golden rule for buying a first bike: buy something slow and old. That way you won't a) kill yourself and b) be heartbroken over the damage when you drop it/go down (because you will, eventually).

People will do what they wanna do.
Before we get into all this, is your friend the type who listens and takes advice. Or is he a thick skulled know it all.
If he's the latter, don't waste your time, just go pick out a funeral suit.

R1

I got an R1 and was a little too nice with letting everyone borrow it. As long as you have framesliders & a nice track Some lady in a white 4dr hit me pretty hard going 80mph when I was late to a business meeting in the AM. Then few days ago my friend crashed it into a parked car and totaled it again. So now its a full stunt/track bike. These are the only pics I have right now. More to come if anyone cares.

PS: Start on a 600, take the MSF, wear gear, go to tracks. That's about it

My first bike was a 700cc Honda VFR. Within the year I had upgraded to the R1 I have today. 1000cc's was no problem to handle if you're smart about it. Never had an accident *fingers crossed*, but I'm also one of the more responsible riders I know. There are a lot of stupid, stupid people riding liter bikes that shouldn't be.

I think how well you ride your 1000 should be defined by what type of riding you do.
If you commute on 1000 then its actually easier than a 600.
If you actually ride it, or stunt it, then you're better off starting with a 600.

My brother got a 2006 650 Suzuki V-Strom (That is the correct spelling) two weeks ago. Nicely blacked out and all. Though bikes is not my cup of tea. A colleague of mine got killed yesterday while out riding with a group. Funny thing is that the initial group split into two sections and one guy from each section ended up dead in an accident. Not a way to go...

Anyway, pic of my brother's bike

Once heard that a 1000CC bike will break almost every speed limit in the continental United States in first gear.
1) what is the highest speed limit in the US? 70? 75?
2) Can that really be true?

My first bike is a gsxr 1000. you can ride it as gentle or aggressive as you want to. When I have my daughter on the back, I put around like its a 50cc scooter.

Yes it is true, you can break any speed limit in first gear, my gixxer will hit about 90 in first gear. :p

Tell him that I said, "From one officer to another, utilize your departments' Motor Officer school (...assuming that his department uses Motors) and learn to ride properly before purchasing a 1000cc street bike!"

At the VERY LEAST, attend an MSF beginner/advanced course.

as it has been said earlier, it all depends on how he will ride. if he is hard headed and immature then yes the 1k will probably bite him hard, my friend just got into an accident due to an idiot learning on a 1k kid hit the throttle too hard front lifted up and ran him off the road and later crashed. So yeah 1k is no joke, but depends on the rider. If he has no previous experience on 2 wheels take a MSC. I also ride a 1k with some work done to it if your responsible you should be fine

I believe that the issue is much more serious than just riding behavior. A twist of the wrist on a 1000 results in a very different outcome than that of the current 600's. It is inevitable that he will experience an event on the streets that will cause him to react poorly/incorrectly (..especially being a new rider). I'd seriously suggest that he buy a 600 - which has plenty of power - and learn to ride in a variety of environments before trying to handle a bigger, more powerful bike.

fact is, if this cat is as hard headed as the OP is saying, he probably doesnt belong on a 1000s, as he clearly thinks he knows it all, and that mentality on a 1k is a recipe for disaster.

But as ive said, grown ass man, hes gonna do what he wants.
