low coolant and now no heat ? any ideas ?

car is an 02 325ci with 55k miles on it. I have been noticing for about 6/7 months that there was a slow coolant leak because the light would come on and then go away. I had to top it off with a little water 3 times in the past 6/7 months. car has never over heated or anything so I let it go and just checked it often. well i topped it off this weekend and for some reason played with the bleeder screw on the expantion/ filler tank. well now the car has no heat, so i went and turned it back to the original place and the top of the plastic screw broke. I already ordered a new expantion tank but now that im thinking about it is that screw on the upper hose or the expantion tank ?

why did my heat stop working ? could that screw caused it or do i have another problem? Do you guys think the expantion tank might have been my leak point from the get go?

that screw is on the upper hose so thats the part you will need but replacing the exp tank isnt a bad idea and you had no heat because you have air in the system when you get the new tank and upper hose just drain the whole system and then rebleed you should have heat
