When will you buy a 3D printer?

At this point, consumer-grade 3D printers still suck too much to make any useful parts. They are amazing for mocking things up or making little toy trinket things, but the material is too weak and rough for 99% of applications.

For example:
Low res poop

HOWEVER, high-end 3D printers exist that can be used to make high resolution parts that can go directly into production. Rather than plastic extrusion or low-resolution lasers, they use a high resolution laser with a specially cured resin (stereolithography), or simply a high powered laser to melt materials together (selective laser sintering, and direct metal laser sintering). With the latter, you can make parts from thermoplastics, stainless steel and titanium.

For example:
This dropout is made from titanium, polished, and welded directly to the frame right out of a printer.

These high resolution plastic parts far exceed the abilities of traditional machining.

Obviously, these machines cost a lot more, but they can be used to actually make useful things. You could download a car, almost!

As we know, technology keeps getting cheaper as time goes on. Right now, the MakerBots are still $800 to $6,000. In time, we will have the above "high end" technology available for home use in a more reasonable package and cost.

What does it need to come down to before you'd consider buying one? What would you use it for? Do you have one now? I think we are going to see a lot more of these around in the coming years.

The future=you no longer go to the store. All products will be printed at home. You just buy the rights to said product. All perishables will be delivered to you by a drone from Walmart or amazon.

I would be willing to put money on both becoming true soon.

Not sure it's a world I wanna live in but people need their convenience I guess.

That's an interesting thought. Might blur the lines between 'pirating' and theft.

It will have to be an integrated network where the user has no access to the files. Basically you click and the printer goes. You see no file. That way, you can't really duplicate or steal anything. But honestly, it will be hard to protect anyone or any company from theft. Because along with printers will come 3d laser scanners (if they don't already exist)
Essentially survey laser scanners but on a usable, detailed format. Imagine the opposite of a 3d printer.
You put an object in the scanner and it will put the printable file on your machine. You'll be able to make a copy of your shoe, or whatever else.

This will all come. I can see it soon. But like I said, not sure if that's a world I want to live in. It's kind of too far IMO.

They have those already. Still a bit pricey for the average user, but actually not TOO far off. The high end printers are still way off.

Fergo, what kind of stuff does he make?

Amazon is already planning to do deliveries by drones. It'll fly to your house and drop your packages off.

Last I heard this project was delayed/terminated due to local legalities. I did hear about it though.

A company is opening up a 3D printing store on the ground level of my office building. It's going to be huge. I'm curious to see if it's a FedEx/Kinkos of 3D printing or something a bit more private.

They already exist and are actually quite inexpensive if you don't need that much resolution (< +/- 0.005", more than that it's fairly cheap), we have a few of them here at work. The production people use them for first article inspection as well, they are much faster than a caliper or even a CMM.

There is one company that has a 3D scanner, 3D printer, and 3 axis milling machine all in one device. They had a kickstarter a while ago, not sure how far it went.

We have 5, I use them all the time for fixturing and test equipment. Like kuksul said, they aren't good enough for much more than that at this point. The crappy part is that I can design and print a part that works fvcking awesome but is impossible to machine.

How are they going to deal with IP issues? That business sounds like it's both awesome and a huge legal risk.

To answer OP's question, when a DMLS system with plastic capability becomes $4k or less I'll buy one. Until then, it's really only useful for trinkets and toys. The Formlabs Form One is actually pretty good and has good resolution but getting it to finish a print is a huge fvcking challenge. Makerbots are reliable but have poor resolution though not nearly as poor as the pic OP had of the octopus. That much have been a really sh1tty printer...

No clue. Again, not sure what their business model will be.
