Fell in Love with Z4

I test drove 03 Z4, sky blue. I forgot what I saw on internet about engine size.
After test driving, I thought it's gotta be 3.0 but it was 2.5 I am sure 3.0 will blow my mind.

I drove 325ci vert also. it was def slower than my 325ci coupe (totaled).

instead of buying the same coupe, I want to try something different.

I am not getting a lot of money from insurance company. I want to pay in full for around $10,000

I found Z4 around nations that goes for $11000~12000 with ok mileage (like 80,000)
I also found 330ci silver vert with imola red interior

I am a single guy and I don't carry bunch of friends. so space is not big issue at all for Z4.

I am just concerned that you can find all parts and resources about DIY for e46 but for Z4, those are not available that much.

For e46, I would def get manual. For Z4 , manual is rare.
Is it ok to get auto? I tried steptronic like drag racing and it was quite fun.

If you moved on to Z4 from e46, can you share any positive or negative feedbacks?

I have a z4 coupe in step, and I do wish it was a manual. The z4 doesnt have the most compliant ride. Its alot more stiff then the e46, but turns in better, and has sun visors that will remind you of ww2 fighter plane cockpit.

the 2 cup holders really dont work too well, and in the coupe with the option of z4m seats make the blind spots harder to see because of the bolstered vader seats . I have to set my side view mirrors to see more outward instead of staring at the beautiful humps of the rear quarter panel. Also getting out the car for me (5'11") I kinda have to use the bolster to lift my self up and out the car...

the sports button and sports mode transmission setting changes the car dramatically, having it on, it will not change up until you give it more gas, and everystop light when you drop the step into 1st, it will shoot out the hole pretty fast.

the car moves, almost as fast as my supercharged 330ci, it gets up to speed very quick and picks up very nicely

not too many minuses except its two seater, but even the roadster has enough room to pack stuff for a weekend getaway.

if you have a manual car right now, and you plan to get a step z4 for a DD.

Just remember that the step will get played out quick in the z4, Luckily i still have a 330ci and even the x5 to drive other then the z4. After a few days with the z4, i cant wait to jump into the 5-speed 330ci.

for a car being that sporty and tossable, it loses abit of soul without the proper clutch pedal. Even though I drive it in manual mode and "fake it", its taken me awhile to get over it.:p

i got the coupe since it was more "rare" and i have a friend who died in a convertible so i promised myself no convertibles.. no regrets so far.

but do keep an eye for one in a proper manual transmission..

cause if mine was in stick, id probably take the ess supercharger ot of my 330 and stick it in there.

great car, great prices, and great color.

edit:

oh

here a pix of mine

Manual. I bought a step and it was such a big mistake.

I have always admired BMWs Z4, as it is a beautiful design. Hope you find a manual with Z4 in your price range. Good luck

I have a 330 and a Z4. Both are racecars. Here's what i've noticed:
1. The Z4 turns in much better. This is because the Z4 has a much shorter wheelbase
2. The Z4 uses the engine, transmission. suspension, radiator and rear diff from the E46 (the engine in my Z4 is out of a 2003 330)
3. Z4 is lighter. For example, my 330 has no ballast and it weighs 2800. The Z4 has 300 lbs. of ballast and it weighs 2875 (we have to weigh that as per the rules).
4. The Z4 has a lower CG.
5. The Z4 is about 2 ft shorter than the 330. I know this because i have to load both cars in the trailer.
6. The rear track is wider on the Z4 as the rear trailing arms are the same as a 325 but the rear hub is offset about 1" further outward.
7. The Z4 has an aluminum hood
8. The Z4 has all electric power steering. When it is not needed, there is no draw on the engine.
9. You can unbolt the rear fenders (just like on the Z3). If someone hits you in the rear fender buy a new one and bolt it on. As for an E46, you need to repair it.
10. Women like convertibles. Pretty self explanatory.

The 330i will be faster, despite the Z4 2.5i being a bit lighter and coming with the 3.46 final drive. I'd hold out for a manual Z4 3.0i and add the 3.46 rear end - nippy. The Z4 is essentially the same as the E46 cab - the bodies are different but they share tons of similar hardware. Look for a Z4 made after April 2004 if you're shopping pre-facelift - there were some significant feature changes at that time that are handy to have. The biggest difference is the electric power steering vs te E46's hydraulic assist, and the harsh run-flat tires vs normal ones. Oh, and only the Sport Package models have the sport button on pre-facelift Z4s.

Urban Green - very rare, mostly because it was very unpopular. I think it was dropped by 2005.

I love my z4, but I wouldn't get the early one with the M54. I have an 08 coupe and its faster than my e46 race car, handles way better than my e46 did stock, and is all around more fun. I average 29 MPG with mixed city and highway driving. Mine is 6MT w/just sport pkg. It really is a pleasure to drive every day.

I like the Z4, and the Z4M is a visceral driving experience.

I got a red M coupe 6 speed as a loaner from the dealership a while back. OMG. Sexiest car I've ever driven. I'd take it in a second.
