How and why did you choose 3" for the piping size? Had a 'good old guy' question why I was thinking of going so big for my engine.

Having only a limited understanding of exhausts and fluid dynamics, I ran off some simple things that I did know;

1) Cross sectional area
2) Weight per foot of tubing
3) Cost per foot of tubing

The setups I got the data for were:
  1. a dual 2.00" setup (stock M54)
  2. a dual 2.50" setup (stock S54)
  3. a single 2.5" setup (stock M52)
  4. a dual 2.25" setup
  5. a single 3.00" setup
  6. a single 3.5" setup
  7. a dual 3.00" setup (like a friend's 330ci race car, lol)
  8. as well as a couple combinations of dual to single or single to dual.

Single pipes have a distinct advantage over dual pipes.
  • Less material compared to dual pipes of equivalent cross sectional area
  • Lighter
  • Cheaper
  • More muffler options
  • Less bending and welding for fabrication
  • Better flow compared to dual pipe of equivalent cross section area according to an SAE article

More specific reasons I went with a single 3" pipe the entire way back, was that single 2.5" has slightly lower cross sectional area than my 330 has stock, and over 3.00" would have difficulties fitting things. The very beginning of my exhaust starts dual, because I had to bring the dual to single, but other than that, I just saw no distinct advantages of a hybrid dual-single system when the single 3" served my purposes almost exactly. Also the 3" system has just a slightly larger cross sectional area than stock, as I didn't want to use something excessively large and worry about sound resonating and making the exhaust note louder and raspier for no reason, as well as avoid totally destroy any engineering the BMW put in to the engine, head, ecu, and stock exhaust. Lastly, a member I respect with his knowledge suggested single 3" and uses this setup in practice.

Nope, I sold the car before I finished. I could have finished, but usually an aftermarket exhaust doesn't help much for the sale of a car, so I put the stock exhaust back on. Now the piping and mufflers are just sitting around.

$100 takes the $400-$500 worth of stuff I've got if anybody wants it.

Did you get another Bimmer? Since I revived your old thread, can you direct me a site that describes the benefits of a single 3" pipe vs a dual 2.5" one? I'm assuming that is the reason you went with the 3" pipe. Thanks.

I actually went to a Mercedes, but a very special Mercedes at that, a grey market 1985 190E 2.3-16V.

And the answer to why I chose single 3" is a few posts above, at post #122.

I haven't quite gotten to the midsection support part yet so that may add something to the list, as well as I still have to install this setup and test it out so this list is not final...
Have a updated list of this?

Well, long story short, I sold my E46 before I completed this, so I ended up selling the entire setup to AggieE46 who completed it and tested it.

-Vibrant flanges are too large to fit
-Magnaflow mandrel bent tubing was nicer than the Dynomax
-I ended up using an addtional 3' for 3" straight tubing
-could substitute one of the 90 bends if buying 3' of straight tubing

If you search through AggieE46 you can find more details about the finished exhaust: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=736943

Yeah, I intended to use it without headers, so the muffler and resonator are both straight through type designs.

Yes, it is quite loud. Currently working on getting a new y-pipe going and I'll probably swap out the muffler for a slightly longer Magnaflow.
