Avic Z3/Z2? ...or?

Well, I've been looking for a new HU, and currently have a pioneer avh-6600DVD, but have want to fit a 2xDIN unit such as the pioneer avic-z3, or something similar and use a custom bezel. How hard is this going to be to upgrade? I didn't install the one i currently have, but believe it has a brain-unit that is hidden under the steering wheel column.
I know you have to do some modification to the HVAC or something, and am willing to do that, but am really looking for a new HU, and wanted to know what some options are.

I really like the pioneer HU's, but don't know much about other brands, any help? Thanks!

EDIT: After research, the kenwood dnx8120 also looks nice, and a bit lower in price than the Z3. Anyone able to fit either of these in there 3 series?
