Regardless whether your brother thinks it should not be a fundamental right, the fact of the matter is that the right to keep and bear arms is. The Consititution does not grant this right, it recognizes it. Ironically, there is a very clear provision in the Consititution for the right to keep and bear arms, while there is none for a standing army (the Founding Fathers actually feared a standing army). Tell your brother to lrn2history, and if he really feels that owning firearms isn't an absolutely American right he can feel free to move to a multitude of unarmed countries. Countries like China, N. Korea, Darfur, E Timor, Venezuela, and of course Mexico has some pretty strict gun laws as well. I'm sure they would welcome him as a comrade. However, if he expects 30 million firearms owners to stand by while him and those like him seek to change the very rights and principles our nation was founded on, he is in for a very rude awakening.

I own an AR-15. I am far from a dumb redneck and I certainly did not vote for Bush.

Also, my brother believes that because we have a standing army that NO American citizen should be able to own a gun.

And when that Army/Military is turned against the citizenry?

I'm pro gun rights... and thoroughly embarrassed by the responses from many of the "pro gun rights" posts in this thread

True, but I'd rather die with the gun at my side knowing that as my last act in this life I had fought to protect that freedom and way of life I had, not just bend over and take it in the ass. I completely believe that if gun rights continue to be infringed upon at the current rate, we will be looking at the second civil war within the next fifty years. Gun owners will not bend to the will of the government much longer...it has overstreched its power.

At the moment, I don't have time to type out the hundreds of restrictions and bans that have been made with regard to guns or how many more hundred are on the table, but I will mention one for now (more to follow later).

Assault Weapons Ban, NY State. I have a house there, it affects my right to possess almost any of my firearms on my own property in that state, the very property I and my family have paid tax on for over 30 years.

Yea, alot of Americans died. Not something to be proud of quite frankly, but it also wasn't solely about a provision and right granted by the Constitution. Where as "all men are created equal" was the argument the North touted, gun owners point to "the right to keep and bear arms." The South was doomed to lose and their position was one not supported by the Constitution, just as the argument anti-gun people make is not supported by that document.

This government continues to restrict the sale and possession of firearms by all but the military. At the current rate restrictions and bans are imposed, gun ownership will be non-existent in a few decades.
