Moving on...

Got my 323Ci back yesterday from Open Road BMW...here's what was done on the Invoice:

41-11-7-000-246 Repair Part Insert
33-32-6-760-361 Reduced Shaft Bolt
33-30-6-779-486 Rear Stopper
33-32-6-760-360 Threaded Bolt
33-32-1-093-103 Self Locking Collar

Below all of this: SubFrame Repair - Sublet (meaning the body shop)
Also included, a paid-for Enterprise loaner car (Ford Focus --good mileage if nothing else). The E46 doesn't feel that much different, but I haven't driven it much yet. I'll see how it goes....

how long was your car in the shop for? That seems more like a quick fix...

Just got back from a relatively short drive to the local watering hole...

Well, the body shop had it for all 5 days of this past week.
Maybe it was a quick fix? I really haven't had any problems to speak of
so its kind of hard to compare the repaired car to the previous one. I just bought a pair of front stabilizer links...I guess I'll have my mechanic take a look at what they did after he installs them.

I take mine in for inspection tomorrow, no doubt about what they'll find, I've got a nasty tear. In any event when I scheduled the appointment for inspection I asked the service manager exactly what it is they do for the fix. He indicated that they replace the torn mount(s) with reinforced ones. This involves welding and so forth, hence the body shop work. They don't replace many parts though. FWIW, there's a misconception that the rear subframe is replaced, this seldom cracks, it's the body panel that it's connected to that tears. I plan to have them do the differential mounts and rear trailing arm bushings (which I'll have to pay add'l for) while they've got everything apart. I'll check in when the work is done.

Last Thursday I took my car to get a summer inspection from the dealer and they (Advantage BMW in Houston) said they weren't even checking subframes yet.

just got the call from the attorney. the settlement went through they are currently finishing the final paperwork. he said something about it not going into affect until September but that some dealerships are already starting to do sub-frame inspections.

Is that what I think it is....
When the repair is done do they always weld in a reinforcing plate? I am worried they will just weld the crack and call it good

in that picture, it looks like it hasn't been weld it yet just grind it down. but you are right about if BMW will just weld it and call it a day.. because that's what they are going to do.

Do you know if this "replace torn with reinforced" is a standard? I am worried in my case they might just weld the crack instead of reinforcing the area.

they take out the old piece and weld in a new piece. The only re-enforcement is a foam they spray under there. Or that is what I can see. I am pretty sure they don't weld in re-enforcement plates but I will ask when I get my car back... These companies are lame! Say one thing than do another! "car done on wednesday" Call them up on Wednesday "uh we lied car is done on Monday"

My understanding from the guy at the body shop (this particular dealer has their own body shop) is that they cut out the whole area around the sub frame mounts and replace them with reinforced pieces which are welded back in. It's then sealed and repainted.

When I took the car in for the inspection, they shot some digital pix of the tear, sent them off to BMW for an approval and then sent me off to the body shop to have the work done.

As to your concerns, I doubt they'll just weld the crack. Keep in mind that these dealers will get reimbursed from BMW for the work so it's not like they're necessarily trying to do this on the cheap since it's not coming out of their pocket. In order to do this work they need to completely remove the rear end mechanicals, I can't imagine there's any incentive to do all that and then just try to spot weld things.
