Northern Prestige, North Coburg, Melbourne - Service Results

Hi Guys!
just got my 320ci back from Northern Prestige auto service in north Coburg for a general oil service
Northern Prestige is a recognised by bmw.Their stamps say NORTHERN PRESTIGE, and have a bmw logo on the top (looks good for resell, compared to just any run of the mill mechanic)

when i first got there, my car was taken to be worked on immediately. they then made me a nice cup of coffee and turned on the heater upstairs because i was going to wait for the car to be serviced '

whilst my car was being services, their was also 2 e46 M3's being serviced, and a CLK 350. one older Mercedes Benz as well. Parked out the front was many other beemers, including multiple X5's E60's E90's etc. Nice eye candy whilst i was waiting as well!

as you all know i had low oil in my car, and was under the impression that the car was burning oil!
when they started they notified me that my car is actually not low on oil, just the sensor is reading incorrectly which can be one of two things
1. faulty sensor... needs to be replaced
OR
2. dirty sensor, clogged up with old oil that will be cleaned out during the oil flush being preformed during my service.
i told them to continue with the service.
my wiper blades were screwed as well so they replaced them as well...

below is prices and what was performed:

ENGINE OIL/SYNTHETIC (genuine BMW Castrol) 6.5L at $18.00 per\L TOTAL: $117.00
OIL FILTER: $21
ENGINE FLUSH: $35
WIPER BLADE INSERT 2x @ $8.00 per\blade TOTAL: $16.00
VEHICLE SERVICE INSPECTION (SCOPE A) 1.5h @ $75.00 per/h TOTAL $112.00
(refer below for details on what was checked.)

TOTAL FOR SERVICE: $310.50 + $30.15 GST = GRAND TOTAL: $331.65

During the inspection the following was noted though:
Caste Bushes slightly worn - causing a knocking noise when breaking/releasing break - $450.00
Drive Belt Idler Bearing Noisy - creating a winding noise during idling - $130.00
Also if the oil sensor is faulty, and not fixed from the engine flush i was quoted $450.00 for a new one.

i was also notified i need to run on 95 octane or 98 octane fuel to reduce a pinging and winding noise heard during drive and neutral

below was what was checked during the safety check/vehicle service inspection (Scope A):

vehicle on Floor
- Brake servo
- Brake servo hoses/check valve
- Footbrake travel
- Handbrake travel
- ABS warning system
- Fault diagnosis trouble codes
- Instruments

- Steering column couplings
- Suspension joints/seals/gaiters
- Rear differential oil leaks
- Road springs
- Shock absorbers/mounting
- Exhaust system/mountings
- Break pipe corrosion
- Fuel system leakage
- under body condition/sealant

Vehicle half raised
- Front wheel bearings
- Front break pads
- Front break discs
- Rear break pads
- Rear break discs
- Handbrake cables/linkages
- Break hydraulic system
- Tyre condition
- Tyre pressure

under bonnet operations
- Battery terminals
- Battery electrolyte level
- Battery condition/specific gravity
- Washer bottle

Road test vehicle

- Clutch operation
- Vehicle suspension operation
- Engine performance
- Transmission
- Brakes

- Instruments

Once i left i checked my car over when i got home, only to notice a screw sticking out of it!! (noooooooo!)
anyway... called northern prestige they said come back in we will fix it free of charge... that they did, and it only took a few minutes.

Overall i had a good experience at northern prestige, and is half the price of BMW!

hope this has helped anyone, and sorry i wrote so much, just wanted to be descriptive!

James

I'm going to get BMW stamps and signs all over my shop, then call it BMW...

there is no such thing, ring BMW if you like.

I think you can, although they are often associated with a dealer, i.e. Brisbane BMW and Brisbane BMW Bodyshop. Here is a cut and paste from BMW Australia in their submission to the Smash repair inquiry, productivity commission: "For our part BMW Group Australia has recognized this need by appointment of a national network of specialist BMW body repairers. Regular training and briefings on new vehicle design/construction/electronics and related repair techniques form an important part of our ongoing support for these repairers.".

Keeping in mind this is referring to "repairs" not "servicing".

Northern are very good at what they do, I knows the boys there, and they have helped me out from time to time. But yeah as far as automotive shops go, BMW aus only recognize the dealer, as you could guess, why would they take business away from dealers by giving people a cheap option

Stephen and Andy are correct, BMW only has their authorised body shops, NOT workshops. They may be good, but they are not recognised, or trained by BMW Australia.

^ Why can't we get a guy like Steve here in Sydney?
^ Why can't Sydney-sider E46 drivers be just as friendly as you people from VIC?

FML! And...
Why are you Melbournians so close to each other? It seems like you all know each other somehow? Here in Sydney, I wave to another E46 driver, and he just rips it away from me...

But yes! Back to the topic of northern... The boys there are VERY good, if you ever have gearbox problems they can sort them out, they rebuild in house!
mmm come to think of it they can sort out Sam's lower diff he wants, but he needs to find the lower gear set first. As BMW do not make them that low.

You guys have gloomy weather but and your weather is generally much colder than ours. I don't like that.
Driving a black car, I'd hate to wash it and wax it, then in a few hours find that it raining........like always. lol

Sydney has more days of rain per year than Melbourne, along with 2x the annual rainfall of Melbourne (using historical averages). So i'd say that you would know more about washing & waxing a Black car than our southern neighbors.

People in Melbourne can't drive for ****. I think because they are all worrying about creeping over the speed limit by 1km/h. Speed cameras that aren't sign posted are just gay.

P.S - People in Sydney are not friendly.

+1 for the comment on speed camera's VIC is a complete joke, at least in NSW they give us a sporting chance with a few signs before you get to them!

You forgot that Sydney's roads are complete rubbish though, compared to nearly every other state in the country though!
