Got my Alpine setup!

After a month of researching and being convinced I wanted the Type X, I really didn't want to spend $1200 on a sub, and didn't want to rattle the car apart. I settled with the Type R and am happy with it.

I bought the stuff at Best Buy because of their good financing deal (the amp, sub, and 4 gauge wire kit) but I knew I didn't want to get the box at BB because theirs kinda suck. It was either a build-a-box sealed that was too small, or an overpriced ported one. I knew I wanted ported so I went to a stereo shop and they only had 1.25 cu. foot.. which is too small for a 12" R. I got a quote for a 1.75 cu. foot (which I still think is too small) for $160. Still too much IMO.. so I spent 5 minutes on CL, found a guy with a 2 cu. foot ported box in great condition for $40.

Today was install day.. and since I didn't have tools, and I can finance this as well, I took it to Best Buy. I know I know.. but these guys were good. They actually asked where I wanted the amp, set it right for break in, and gave me enough cord to set the box on the ground and unplug it (if I need trunk space). Originally I was told I couldn't get an appointment until Sunday, but that I could leave it and if somebody didn't show up I could get it done (you know how that goes).. I decided to go for it anyway. By the time I left I was told it would be done by 4. Without a ride I walked around the mall and saw The Hangover (worth it) and went back 20 minutes early itching with anticipation. I was killing time around Best Buy when across the store loud store I hear booming bass... and that was with the bass turned pretty far down.

As far as sound.. it's great. If you want clean bass, but don't want something quiet this is a perfect solution. The R is very accurate, but in the right box.. damn it booms.

A couple pics:

The box I got is definitely for the lows. Most guys on here want clean and accurate bass, and not loud, low bass, which the R will do as well. It's all about the right box. I listen to everything, but love the boom of rap on a sub, so I got the 2cuft ported box. The great thing about the Bimmer is that even with it cranked it doesn't rattle the car like crazy. I need a pad for the plate but that's it. I've seen this sub shake the mirror down on cheap cars but it's not a problem with the E46. When I was listening to it outside cranked about halfway I was kind of disappointed with the sound level, and then got inside, and wow.. it was freakin loud. Definitely recommend this sub.

Setup is:
Stock deck (bass adjuster on radio is enough to control - only downside is it changes the speakers bass)
Hi-low adapter
4 guage wiring
Alpine Type R 1242
MRP500
Stock HK speakers + amp

I don't know enough about subs to know what port noise is, but I don't have any unusual sounds. It sounds good and hits really low.. I'd guess <40hz. I was worried about the port size too when I first got it but it sounds good.

What would a bigger port do for me?
