Information about going to gun range for the first time

So I have organized a group of friends to go to a gun range and do a introductory shooting experience.

At the moment the plan is to do some Skeet/trap shooting 2 rounds of 50 shots/50 clay targets and then a clip of some handgun and clip or equivalent of a low end rifle. The details of the handgun and rifle will be decided when we get there.

So what can I expect?

What should I know?

Any tips that will make the day go smoothly?

Any basics? No shooting experience what so ever.

TIA

Nothing to get worried about, once you get there everything will become apparent.

Just pay attention to the general gun safety rules and follow them to the tee, pretty strait forward.

check out the NRA's 3 rules and follow them. Other than that, it's magazine, not clip

If it is your first time, treat the gun with care. Always pay attention to where it is pointing and never EVER point it in the direction of another person, loaded or unloaded.

They will tell you this when you arrive.

+1, and never put your finger inside the trigger guard until you are lined up and ready to fire at your target.

Be aware of the safety rules and you'll have a blast. Bring your own eye and ear protection if you have it, sometimes the communal stuff is nasty. Since you'll be shooting shottys, wear some cargo pants or something with big pockets to keep all of your shells handy. Makes a big difference.

Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire (Dont worry, youll mess this up many times.. just learn)

ALWAYS point the gun DOWN RANGE, not up, not down, not sideways...DOWN RANGE. at all times.

Always treat guns as if they are loaded and primed. I dont care if you have your finger in the hammer, the mag is out and you can see sunlight through the barrel. Its ALWAYs loaded in your mind.

Unless your weapon is holstered, dont talk, look or joke with anyone.

If you get a gun jam, call the range officer.

Stand in the range for 5 mins before touching a gun... youll need to adjust to the noise and calm your nerves.

Have fun

He is a First timer...

Gun jams are extremely easy to clear when you know how.
Scary as hell if you dont.

I remember loading my first mag... It took me 10 mins... I handled the bullets like they were eggs, cause I thought they would go off in my hands if I was too rough

Biggest thing...don't horse around...and if you don't know, are unsure of something, have any question whatsoever...point the gun down range, place it on the ground (still pointing down range), back away and ask a range officer. If you've never fired a gun before, ask the person behind the counter to demonstrate it.

Shell casing, when they land inside your shirt, can be VERY HOT.

Yea.... I remember when one flew into my collared shirt.. I whipped my gun up to smack it off with my hand and realized I was pointing the gun right into my temple....

Live and learn

main things to remember:

1) keep your trigger finger indexed at all times until you are ready to fire

2) keep your firearm pointed down range or down at the ground in a direction facing away from yourself and those around you

3) do NOT stand behind or closely beside someone at the gun range while they are shooting

4) when transfering a firearm from one station to another, remove the clip, eject any rounds that may be present in the chamber, lock the slide, and bring the firearm to where you need it to be while pointed at the ground

5) make sure the firearm is NOT loaded with no round in the chamber when you enter the range

6) BOTH hands wrapped firmly around your firearm at all times, no exceptions

7) the range is not somewhere to dick around, because if something goes wrong people can get badly hurt or killed, just use common sense and be mature and everyone will be fine
