Oil Light . . . .

Hey Guys -

I have a 2000 323i - changed the oil the other day but might have a problem. When I start the car, the oil light comes on along with all the other lights as usual. Then, about 30 seconds later, it comes on again - not in red but in orange. It stays on in orange, anywhere from 8 to 15 seconds then goes off and stays off. It only happens after I start it up then doesn't happen again until the next time I start it.

When I changed the oil, I made sure I put the right amount in and even now when I check it, it's dead on in between the two markers. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be going on here? Thanks in advance.

If your oil level is fine, then it's your Oil Level Sensor.

The E46 takes 6.9 quarts. That's probably why you're light is coming on, you're low on oil.

you're not low on oil. it's the oil level sensor. get it replaced next time you change your oil.

Naw, he's good w/ 6.5 qts. 6.9 qts. is best (factory spec), but he's not "low" w/ 6.5.

Don't you think it could be low enough that it's causing the oil light to come on intermittently?

Your oil level is way good. Your oil level sensor has (or is) taking a dump.

^+1. When the sensor starts to go it glows yellow after startup and stays lit for 20-30 seconds then goes out. If you keep an eye on the oil and you can live with it this won't cause any problems. Part's not hard to replace, but costs about $100 and needs to be done at an oil change.

Thanks guys - good to know. I'll keep an eye on it. Now if I could just fix my freakin door lock issue! I'm almost positive THIS is the problem as my symptoms are identical to those laid out on the site. Also, about 2 years ago my AC started blowing hot air, mainly on the drivers side. Turned out to be a hose of some sort but now it's starting to blow hot air on the passenger side . . . when does it end?!
