Abnormal Oil light flashing when brake pressed

I was cruising one day in stop and go traffic and noticed that when i hit the brake pedal, and only when i have the brake pedal pressed, that the oil light (RED) flashes intermittently. This problem has been going on ever since i noticed it. And as previously described, it only happens at low speads and when the brake pedal is pressed. I searched other threads, but those didn't seem, to me at least, to describe exactly what is going on with my car ('03 330i).

I had the filter and oil changed a little over a month ago if that changes anything.

Help please

Oil level is low. When you hit the brakes, the oil is shifting and the sensor is picking it up. Check your oil level.

Red oil light means loss of oil pressure and is pretty serious.

Check oil level and if that looks ok then have a BMW tech look at it immediately.

When your oil light starts flashing red it is usually because you have a problem with your oil level.

Smoke detectors in your house behave in a similar way. If it starts alarming, don't start thinking about how it might be wired wrong or how it might be a battery problem. Let your first thought be that it could be a fire.

Check your oil level and top it up.

Hey,

I had the same problem as you about a month ago. When ever I would hit the brakes my red oil light would come on. When ever I let go and accelerated it would disappear. I created a thread about my problem and got lots of opinions. Here is what I did to diagnose my problem...

1. Checked oil level via dipstick, oil level was perfect, but also topped off as recommended by everyone on the forums. Did not help the problem.

2. I used Castrol 5w-30 Synthetic oil when this problem came on cause i could not find BMW approved oil at my local Autozone / R&S Strauss auto center. But luckily I went to Autozone the day after my problem came up and found Mobil 1 0W-40 Synthetic oil which is BMW approved oil.

3. Went to my local Indy shop, who I am very familiar with and had him change my oil/filter and drove for a couple of minutes and the light disappeared. He said if the problem came back to come back to him so that he could check the oil pressure, but he said nothing was wrong with the pressure when he changed the oil.

Here are the links to the threads pertaining to my problem I made on bimmerforums / bimmerfest / e46fanatics

yellow = oil level
red = oil pressure

yellow = mild
red = severe

yellow = not so bad, take care of it later
red = really bad, "why are you still hurting me?"
