How dangerous is it to drive without a brake caliper retaining clip?

While me and a buddy were bleeding my brakes, we noticed one was missing from a rear caliper...I think when my shocks were but on, they must of forgotten. And the local BMW dealer doesnt have it in stock...at $22.31

i don't think it's dangerous. it'll just make rattling noises when going over broken pavement. i drove with a missing clip for months before i figured out that i had a missing clip.

Driving without the anti-rattle clip is not dangerous. You may experience strange noises. Prolonged driving without the clip may also cause weird pad wear. I drove months at a time on a few of my BMWs without issue.

All i can say is brake ahead of time and no hard braking. The rattle clip actually hold the two pieces togheter. PUT IT ON ASAP.

I drove for months after I bought the car without even noticing it.
But, yeah put it on ASAP.
I bought mine from the stealership, AFAIK Oreilly and Advance don't have that.

I'm just guessing, but I would think that BMW put the clip there for a reason.

For $22, I would not tempt faith with brakes

It's just the anti-rattle clip. At the most, your brakes will rattle. it's not vital to the safe operation of the caliper.

I drove without for years before i figured it out..its one of the biggest reasons for clunks over uneven pavement...right after a brake job..

Hey,

Can you post a link of where you got the clip online? I don't feel like paying the stealership...

I lost a clip this past weekend while I was bedding in my brakes/rotors. I guess there's a reason they are called stealerships, I just got off the phone and was quoted $33.00 for one rear clip for one wheel. Funny thing is I asked for the the part no and he said he couldn't give that to me over the phone.
