Yo dudes,

Anyone have a Remington 1100 G3 and want to give an opinion. I'm about to buy it for skeet / hunting.

The Mossberg 500 is a pretty sweet shotgun too,

I tried the Mausberg 500 and just didn't like it's accuracy compared to my Remy....but you're right, to each his own

870 is apple to oranges. The 870 is probably the best overall shotgun for the money on the market today, and easily the best pump shotgun ever built IMO. But it's on the opposite end of the spectrum as the 1100.

I've never played with the newest ones, but I've shot everything built from the original 1100s to the newest ones before the G3. They're pretty good shotguns, but they have two major flaws:

1. Weight. They're clubs. They're far heavier than they should be. The average 12ga. 1100 comes in at 8lbs in weight. That's WAY too heavy for a field gun. For competition, weight actually helps. This is why the 1100 is really only good as a competition gun.

2. Rubber O-Ring. The biggest flaw of the 1100 has been the rubber O-ring on the gas system. Remington claims to have revamped the gas system to be more reliable with nickel plating and such, but what all they've done to the actual parts of the system, I don't know. If Remington has been able to eliminate the O-ring system on the G3, then the #1 most problematic part of the gun has been eliminated. If they haven't eliminated it, buy a pack of O-rings or just buy a more reliable gun.

I've been an upland game hunter for my whole life. I've done trap and skeet as well, but most of my skill has come from blasting at pheasant and grouse in Minnesota and South Dakota. My uncle had an 1100 for years, and every year, he wound up replacing at least one or two O-rings over the two weekends we would go out to South Dakota in the fall. To add to it, I used to sell guns for Gander Mountain, and the number of complaints I fielded about the 1100 having cycling and gas operation issues were numerous to say the least.

Are you particularly sold on the 1100 G3?
Is there a set amount of money you want to pay or do you have a certain criteria that you're looking for?

I have a pistol grip Mosberg 500 but it only has one purpose. Blowing a window through someone 8ft away.

It's also like number 2 gun on the "Armed Felonies Weapon list"

OP, go to your local gun range and try shooting it...

I most def agree that the 870 is the best shotgun overall for the cost. My wingmaster cost me 300 bucks. (second hand although)

^^I already have an 870. I've gone to plenty of gun ranges, no one has a G3, and unfortunately, I don't think the store is just going to let me take it for a test drive.

I have an older 1187 Sporting Clays model and have never had to replace the o-ring and I love that shotgun. I also have the 870 magnum pump (first weapon) and it is perfect.

The 11-87 had its own issues relating to failure of operating parts. The O-ring issue, while still present with the 11-87, has never been as big as an issue as it was on the 1100s.
