Are you looking for a hunting rifle? Tactical rifle? Display rifle like a Sharps rifle or old lever action? What?

Same with handgun.

When you say collecting, please be specific about desired use. If you want show pieces, that's different than having a working collection that you shoot and tinker with.

I wouldnt buy any hand gun. Best thing to do is go to the range and try out a few. Glocks are no nonsense guns. Point and shoot. I kinda am a nonsense guy, I went with beretta . I would put all my eggs in a basket and buy a sig 556 pistol lol.

These guns are super fun and accurate upto 100 yards (at least).

The g3 is an old ass gun made by HK. Any rifle by HK is at least 3.5k lol. If you are looking into an automatic weapon, be prepared to go through a lot of paperwork, waiting, and money.

edit, well, HK makes new ones still but I think a 338 AR would be better

You can buy a fake mp5 or mp5 clone for like 400. they shoot .22s though and are not automatics. GSG makes good ones. A realy HK mp5 is still expensive as hell.

its not auto and it shoots a weaker round. 22s can kill you but they are not as devastating as a 9mm which the real mp5 uses. I shot a mp5 clone once and thought it was great, affordable, and reliable. An mp5 also uses a shorter barrle. IF you use this, you need to get a SBR license or whatever your state requires. However, if you take the buttstock out it can be considered a pistol and you wont need an additional license. Some mp5 clones have fake silencers to make the barrel length 16in, so you dont need a sbr license again. Also, HK guns are the damn most reliable/accurate guns you can buy. You get what you pay for, but the mp5 clone is still badass.

if you rent a handgun try out the xd series: 9mm=19 + 1 rounds; 40 cal=16 + 1 rounds; 45 cal=13+1 rounds.
for a rifle: ak's are cheap and so is ammo & it fulfills it's designated purpose very well.
my wife's cuz-in-law uses one as his preferred long gun when he's overseas; he's a contractor!

Henderson Defense is a local company. They have CETME/G3 clones (7.62x51mm) for $599. Very solid battle rifle at a very good price and HDI is definitely a stand up shop.

Hey, not exactly a G3.....but if you're digging the style check one of these out:

http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/C...223_Rifle.html
Century C93 Sporter

Shoots .223 which is slightly cheaper than what the G3 uses.
