if you put a lsd in the back of an xi, you do not need to put one in the front. The ratio's just need to match.

You might get unpredictable handling on the edge though.. i.e. in a seriously fast courner the inner front wheel might spin up whilst both rears bite down (due to the LSD), so you might get oversteer.

you will probably find that starting in 2nd gear works best for smoothness in everyday driving...at least that is my case with 3.46 and 330/TS

Yup! I rarely use 1st now unless I want to launch the car hard.

Once again - i'm not concerned with the ratio - that is easy to fix and match. I'm just putting forth information suggesting that an LSD in an xi is doable and, in fact, worth it.

Not using the M3 diff, its not. The only way its doable is using a custom built diffsonline diff, and its not like people don't already know that...

I'm not sure why that is for you, it's not like people with M3s can't use their 1st gear. When I drive my brother's E46 M3 I use 1st with no issues at all.

But you also have another 1000 rpm's to play with, it makes plenty of sense to me. 1st gear would be pretty short on a 5 speed non-M.

it's short but has nothing to do with smoothness on a non FI car.

1st ends VERY quickly when you rip on it. It's just so much easier and smoother to start off in 2nd sometimes. Meh.

Same here... I find it a bit more economical when I feel like granny driving.

exactly - I dont lug the engine and I am not slipping the clutch - so i cant see any damaging effect...in fact its the same way I drove my vette's if I was just commuting and not driving or trying to get somewhere

i don't see how that is not lugging the engine and prematurely wearing the clutch.
with your FI engine i can see the supercharger kicking in and maybe better to not get the rpm that high(atleast that's how my ASA is designed). but on a basic 330 i can't see how starting out in 2nd is good(even with a 3.62). that's the same as a 330hp M3 only using 2nd gear and that has much more torque/hp than a 330.

Freaking awesome, do you use the m3 struts/springs/mounts or the ones you had on the vehicle? Does this require a diff size wheel or offset than what the non-m e46 run?

The only thing left from my stock 330Ci rear end are the PSS10s and RSMs. Everything else (hubs, calipers, trainling+control arms, axleshafts, diff, subframe mounts) is all M3 spec. Your offset will NOT change.

How would this work with an automatic? Would that be a straight swap?
