Restoring 2006 M3

So 2 weeks ago I got a cheap 2006 M3,

Turned out the engine was misfiring, 1 ignition coil 6 spark plugs and some other work I don't remember totaling $510 later the car runs fine.

Mech said I must do Guibo next, Engine mounts, AC I think needs re gassing as only warm air comes out.

Cosmetics, rear quarter window trim on both sides needs replacing, new left and right mirrors and new headlight lenses.

Apart from that I don't think I need to spend over 2k to get it all sorted.

Thing is it's just under 200,000km...

I've grown rather attached to it now, should I sell it and get a lower km model? I don't really want anything older than 2006 though.

Is it SMG? If so, when, if ever was the smg pump replaced? Those tend to fail around that mileage and aren't cheap to replace unless you DIY. These cars are so easy to fall in love with tho

edit: she's beautiful!!

Yes SMG, I had it inspected.

I don't know if/when it was replaced but no issues so far and it shifts really nicely didn't take long to get used to it.

Here's what I was told I must do next.

Drive Belts
Guibo
Engine Mounts
R/C gasket

Plus what I've noticed

Trim peices both sides
Left/Right mirror
Left/right headlight lenses

Nice looking car. Do you mind if I ask how cheap you got it for? (you can pm if you don't want to say out loud)

I'm not too sure about M3's and what level of maintenance you'll need, I'm sure someone else with experience will pipe in and let you know.

Previous owner used it to travel between work sites from a large bank.

Do you like everything else about the car? I.e. Colour, transmission, factory options?

Whether to buy or sell probably comes down to the maintenance that this car has had. If a majority of it's 200kkms have been sitting at 110kmh in 6th and it's been serviced regularly (ideally less than 20kkm intervals) then it could well be in better mechanical condition than a lot of lower km examples on carsales.

Got to weigh up how much extra you'd be spending to get a lower km example and what you're going to save yourself in maintenance by doing so. Keep in mind depreciation is a curve and you've bought in at pretty much the lowest point. (I.e. You'll lose more in depreciation going from 120 - 170kkms than you will going from 200 - 250kkms).

I like the SMG, colour not really but I haven't detailed it yet but I can always wrap it.

Price wise I paid what you'd pay for a 10yo 3 series...

Depends how much you want to spend. If you only want a 2006 model with low kms, it would be on the higher end seeing that 2006 is the last year for the E46.

TBH if I were spending that much I'd go 2006/7 E60 M5

After it's all fixed up to my satisfaction I'll probably wack it on carsales and see how it goes.

In the mean time I'll keep looking at M5s and see how the E92s are dropping.

keep an eye on the rear vision mirror too. If a bubble appears remove it immediately as its about to drop the solution that makes it dim lights at night. The solution will ruin your centre console.

I sold my E60 M5 to get into this car. its a much better drive and in my view better than the e92's too.

I think that's what my left mirror has done? there's a poo looking stain on the actual glass but the frame is fine.

I just like the sound of the V10, I do agree the E46 M3 is one heck of a drivers car!

No the wing mirrors don't have this solution in them. Mine have started looking tatty around the edges too. Its on my list to replace.

Check the front cowl as well at the base of the windshield. It starts deteriorating somewhat like the window trims. I've replaced all but one of my window rubbers now.

I've loaded up a cart on ECS tunning of cosmetic items, are our M3 side mirrors heated? I only see the one kinda tinted blue.

Also with replacing the cracked rear window seal, is it glued in? If so what do I need
