Subframe Repairs - Who has had it done?

I've had my M3 checked twice now. BEMW in Castle Hill had a look while replacing RTABs and were happy to report that so far no cracking. ( 74,000 kms ).

RTABs on the M3 don't last that long and when they are worn the rear suspension can move around pretty badly, mine did! This puts extra stress on all the rear parts and may assist in fatiguing the sub frame mount points.

I'd suggest collecting as much info on the US class action. This document should be of particular interest.

BMW USA have issued two repair methods.
1) they fill the frame channel with epoxy / sealant for cars prior to 04 with cracking less then 20mm.
2) they replace the whole floor section for cracks greater than 20mm or older than 04.

I'd like to see BMW offer repair type (1) to all BMW owners as a preventative measure, probably save themselves a shot load of money in the long run.

But at this point i think the plates are looking more and more like the best option... the mind boggles though because the e36 M3, had plates standard iirc?

Strange, most of the ones I've seen are on the right.

80+% are passanger side.

i was under the impression that most happened on the left,.. same side as the muffler..on non M obviously

After speaking to BMWboy we have the ball rolling. He is assisting in getting information of his own vehicle which had been repaired by BMW Oz.

Should anyone else have a repaired vehicle please submit your information via pm, dont worry about discretion, nobody will know. It will only be documented for legal reasons against BMW Australia.

mine was repaired by BMW under goodwill for the previous owner. it is a 2001 M3 coupe.

i am currently going into my own class action about the passenger RTA mount as this is the other area of manufacturer defect. the estimate for these costs is $7,250.

i am about to start a new thread whereby we just list our year,. model, defect and whether it was repaired by BMW or not.....

I'm just about to buy an E46 325Ci and have been following the subframe issue with some interest. I joined here just to offer a suggestion on negotiating this with BMW for those with issues.

If enough people make it known that we, the owners of E46's, are aware that the fault is a manufacturing defect. Should enough people complete this form: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...s/defects.aspx BMW may be forced into issuing a recall for all E46's. This would be quite costly and time consuming for them. Instead, they should just do the right thing and fix any cars reported to them. Make it known that you're part of one or several BMW owner communities and that you WILL publicise the fault, taking it to DOTR if needed.

Has anyone yet got enough information to get an idea of the percentage of cars affected by this fault? I'm honestly a bit nervous about handing over my cash for one, especially if there is no recourse thru BMW for the repair.

i was talking to a guy who worked quite high up at BMW Australia.. and he wasnt even aware of this so called "fault" ...

it scared me to think how many 46's are out there with their subframe mounts fkt and the owners arnt even aware

How??????

Which part of the company does he work in? Finance, or marketing, or corporate, sales, or technical?
Do you really think the finance or the corporate marketing guy will know anything about the cars?

If those owners are getting the cars serviced then they will be aware of a hole in their rear floor as the mechanic should check all suspension mounting points on every service.

I currently have some owners wanting to use my lawyer to help their similair situations, as said above the more the better. Please keep info updated guys as this is a benefit for all E46 owners both now and in the future.

My lawyer is a sponsor of major car events and also a driver in Australia wide events. i.e Targa. In all honesty I cant see anyone better to handle this situation.

I just Spoke with my Service advisor at BMW Sydney and he said the defect was only for a certain chassis range and a very small amount of Australian cars were affected. He also said it was mainly USA cars that were affected and that they are a diffecnt chassis ype to the bulk of Austarlian cars. He also said not to worry because if it does happen BMW will sort it out.
