New Addition to the Gun Vault!

Okay, I splurged and finally bought a large-bore rifle. I've always wanted a .308 rifle, and I was sick of waiting for my M1A that's not coming until sometime in the Fall of 2009. I was on the fence about buying one for a while, but then I saw the J.Allen Enterprises JAE-700RSA stock and knew I had to get a rifle to put it on.

So, I hunted around all day and finally found the rifle I wanted at Cabela's. I bought a Remington M700 VTR (Varmint-Tactical Rifle) .308. If you're not familiar with it, it's got a new trigger system called the X-Mark Pro Trigger that is very crisp and light for a factory trigger. The barrel is 24" long and is forged into a triangular shape that makes it much stronger and increases the surface area of the barrel, allowing it to cool faster and more efficiently (which means better accuracy). I decided to get the 24" barrel rather than the compensated 22" barrel. This way I'd get more accuracy and it wouldn't be as loud. The stock is pretty cool too. It has a beavertail forend, rubberized grip inserts, and is ventilated to help cool the barrel. That being said, it's going to be removed when my JAE stock comes. I'll probably mount that VTR stock on my .223 varmint rifle and remove the Kevlar stock that's on it right now.

Stock photo of the M700 VTR with the 22" compensated barrel:

Images are not posting....

But if I wanted to get a shotgun like a Remington 870 or 1100 , where should I buy it...is Cabela's any cheaper than WalMart or Dick's sporting goods ?
I don't know as much about shopping for guns like I do a can of beans or parts for my car.

Congrats on your new gun though.

Images should be working now.

The best thing to do is to shop around for prices. Most places will price-match or price-beat for guns. Walmart is a good place to check for good prices, but they have a limited selection and you'll probably be disappointed with their level of knowledge and their inventory. I hate Walmart personally, but they do have the best prices on ammo. I would check around, but Cabela's or Gander Mtn have the best selections. Or, Bass Pro Shops or other major hunting places. Dick's is pretty limited, and their prices seemed a bit high when I went there last week. They used to be good when they were Galyan's Trading Co.-tons of inventory. Now it's a disappointment.

As for the shotgun, the 870 is by far one of the best shotguns ever built. Period.
The 1100 and 11-87, not so much. You can do better. For autos, look into Benelli (my favorite and top choice), Winchester, Browning, or Beretta.

Nice. .308 is a fun round to shoot. My Mosin shoots a 7.62x54, pretty much the same.

How do you like that out of the box? Is it free floated from the factory? I have a 700 Police, that I love but is older and I'm looking to build a new bolt gun. I looked at the 5R but don't want to pay the premium...and I know the VTR is more reasonably priced which is nice since I'm gonna strip it down.

I haven't shot the rifle yet. I plan on going to the range and properly breaking it in before seriously shooting it.

All Remington rifles are free-floating. Remington realized the advantage long ago about the free-floating barrels. Any Remington heavy-barrel rifle is more accurate than most people can shoot. I have an M700 VS .223 that shoots through the same hole at 200 yards. I expect this VTR to be the same.
I'll let you all know how it goes with the rifle. I probably won't shoot this rifle until the spring.

- The rifle was $729. Ammo runs from $16-49 depending on the cartridge.
- The stock will be between $1200-1600 depending on which options I get.
- Scope will run $1059-1329 for the 4.5-14x50, depending on if I get it w/ the illuminated reticle or not. Another scope I'm looking at is $1199-1579 (Leupold Mark4 8.5-25x50 LR/T).
- The scope MOUNT is $400. I found out that it's got a different thread measurement, so I have revised my decision and will be getting a Badger Ordnance base for $150.
- Leupold Mark 4 steel rings are $135
- Bipod I can get for $165
- US Tactical One Shot kit is $140
- Blackhawk! drag mat is $169 ( I may get a different model, costing $279)

Yikes upwards of 5k

It sounds rediculous, totally awesome. When you get it finished and start taking it to the range, get a video camera and post some vids up...I'd love to hear that thing in action.
