Thinking of buying an e36 m3??

Yes, I know it's an e46 forum. Just want feedback from any other e36///m owners.

I am looking to buy another car to keep miles down on my 330i and my wife's Jeep Commander....Looking at a 1997 m3 with 145,000 miles on it. Good tires, great condition and serviced locally. First BMW I had was a 97' m3 and I can't believe the wife is actually ok with buying one as a third car. The m will not be driven daily but will be driven about 200 miles a week. Any comments or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Get it. I miss my e36

Although I do find it surprising, I would have considered a M as the weekend car and the e46 (non-M) as a daily.

thats right, dont buy it , nothing more needs to be said.
the e36 is the ugliest car ever build by BMW. But the M3 will be a great handling car ( far better then ANY e46 including M3 ) but the looks just kill it

So if you're into handling and dont care about the looks >> get it , otherwise please dont.

How can you not like the looks of the E36 our E46's take tons of styling from the E36 cars.

I guess everyone has their own unique opinion....However I totally disagree with BlockedOut. I think the e36 M3 is still an awesome looking car!! And it looks much more bold and stylish than the e46. Personally the e46 just looks a bit too 'common' or bland for me, the Camery of BMW. Sure I own an e46 xi as a daily driver...but out of necessity. Needed a 4 door and AWD for my commute.

I REALLY miss my former car, a pristine e36 M3 sedan. Alpine White, black leather. Got rear ended in August. RIP. But it did not make sense to replace with another RWD for a daily driver given I drive 70 miles per day even in snow. She was an amazing car and even had Ground Control Coilovers!

E36 was a great looking car for its time. But that time has past. No, don't get it. Put your money in the bank for the next newer BMW.

Did not have the time or energy to go through with that. Just had a son and started a new job position.

However, I bought it from insurance and sold it to a buddy. He pulled the S52 engine / trans and installed in his '92 e34.

Now he has a killer 5 series. M3 S52 engine and trans converted over to OBDI and shorter rear gearing. It has 255 tires on the rear and still rips em free on the upshifts!!

Sketchy....You interested in a complete Ground Control Coilover kit for your E36? I still have the kit from my e36.

See link, this is what I am selling, front Koni adjustable sturts, rear Koni adjustable shocks, springs, hardware, etc. ~20,000 miles on it, still in great shape!

I don't see the point in getting a high mileage E36 M3 just to keep your miles low on the 330. I would save the money and put it into your 330. On the other hand, you'll have a lot of fun driving the M3 around as your daily driver and you'll never want to drive your 330 that much anymore. LOL!

I had a 1997 E36 M3 which I regret selling 3 years ago. My current E46 M3 doesn't compare in excitement that I had with my track modded E36.

Whoever thinks the E36 is an ugly car must be high on something! lol

here's a few pics of her before:

here's my current ride:

the E36 M3 looks way better than any of the newer BMW's as of yet. The styling cues are so japanese in reference and the lines are way out of wack on the new BMW's. And the interiors are just so . Maybe the next line up of BMW's could do better. But for BMW purists, the current line up just sucks (in terms of styling).

Nah, I've been living in Tx for the past 3 years and looks like I'm here for the long run since I bought a house here. Plan to make a trip up NH next fall season and watch a Pats game at Gillette.

I'm not trying to sound mean but my car looks WAY better than yours.

Its clear from your statement that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Get one, if it is well maintained at 145k miles it has a long time to go! I severely miss my e36 m3/4 which was side-swiped a couple months ago Mine looked exactly like Mike Ms except I had authentic AC Schnitzers, and a laundry list of aftermarket parts

The e36s are widely acclaimed as the best generation of BMWs, and as far as the M3 is only second to the e30 M3
