Exhaust/Catalytic/muffler replace/remove?

Over the weekend my car took on some damage trying to clear a larger rock. a stupid mistake on my behalf.

I cracked a bracket holding up the transmission which will be replaced (75 bucks for parts) as well as damage to the front catalytic converter (640 bucks for new system i believe both front and rear cats).

Is the front catalytic converter imperative to maintain a healthy vehicle or will I face o2 sensor issues?

the car is a bit old and im trying to cut corners a bit. Is it possible to just delete the first catalytic converter with out harming the vehicle.

I also have an AA 328i/323i Gen 3 High Flow bolt on muffler if this makes any difference.

with labor im looking at 1100 for this work. and 640 minus some labor would make this a much smaller repair.

this was the closest image I could find of my undercarriage. The red circle is the damaged area.
