if i were you, i wouldnt let a bunch of dudes on a forum decide what motor to throw into MY car. there are loads of noobs on here. i think you should talk to some pros who have done the swaps and see what kind of different costs and work is associated with different swaps, and take it from there.

I think everyone recommending swapping an M engine in is crazy, personally. Big american power is cheap to come by, and pretty awesome--No need to spend for the newer ones. Get an LS-1!
Or, my personal favorite engine (but probably the smallest V8 mentioned so far), the 4.0L 1UZ-FE. That thing sounds AWESOME, is dirt cheap, and super reliable. One day, I hope to do this to my car (after it's retired from the street, probably) |

See; JDM motor... but a V8... Not wild on the idea of using that, but at least it deserves a look...

GM LS3 all the way...its cheap, has a multitude of upgrades, and the best power to dollar ratio..Who gives a sh1t about keeping it BMW powered when you can pretty much have a 4dr Corvette..If i had that kind of money to play with an another E46 to do it to, that would be the route id go...

hartge is pure sex. obviously any v8 will do with the result of being a monster. i myself would go with the ls3 motor. much more mod potential when in its stock form becomes boring. maybe i'm biased coming from a chevy background(all trucks lol) before buying my bmw. who knows...who cares...i don't. those of you attacking the OP for not wanting a "rice burner" motor in his car are only making yourselves look like idiots. he stated what he wants. his ideas. he is asking for opinions on specific motors. grow the hell up guys and help him decided.

At WOT, it sounds like the there's 8 little armies doing battle inside the block! That thing is crazy heavy though... Close to 700lbs if I recall... I'll leave that to someone crazier then me though... It'd probably me pretty wicked to see that thing crammed under the bonnet of a project 8-series chassis, after the V12 kicks... I'd like to see that just for the rear deck badging... it'd be an 894Ci ![]() Quote:

go with an LS3. similar weight to the stock motor (plus it's not as long, so it will sit farther back in the engine bay), very good gas mileage (25+mpg in the corvette iirc), good power stock, and loads of aftermarket support. I would budget for an LSD, either an off the shelf item, or a rear subframe swap from an M3 with LSD.
oh, and budget for tires. lots of tires ![]() edit: I have a supra as well an an e46, and the 2jz options are great, but $/hp, the LS3 will win out. Last edited by Enraged; 10-19-2009 at 03:36 PM. |

Oh trust me, that idea has been thrown around with the guys who are helping me... ...the conversation quickly ends with me asking, "OK, again... Which one of us has ever played with an S85?" (then all you hear is crickets)

![]() So, the OP admits to insanity. I say... take the cash, purchase medication and administer until the insanity clears up. How about the Judd GV4?

LS3 would be the most fun out of that grouping... Seeing that it has over 400HP and has the best price to hp gain if you look at it like that, I would do that instead... Forget the guys who do E39 M5 motors in there, that's been there and done that, we want to see something new.
The M3 motor will be too expensive, so I would go LS3.
